Hi, Greeting from Indonesia,
iam newbie for ace oxy,
Since i buy Victor Performer, when i use 4-MFA-1 Rosebud Heating Tip,
i have experience Sustained Backfires few times, and now i lil scare to using that heater.

I didnt catch the meaning of "Starve or Choke welding nozle".

I read for heating nozle :
Never starve or choke a welding nozzle or multi-flame heating
nozzle 4-MFA-1 Rosebud Heating Tip.

Could anybody explain, what is Starve or choke ?

Regards

Joel

In this case, starve or choke means to not give the tip enough fuel.

Multi-flame (aka "rosebud") heating tips need a LOT of gas flow to run properly.

Even the 'little' Victor #4 MFA nozzle calls for some pretty big flow rates.

Acetylene at 6-10 psi and flow rates of 6-20 cfh. At the flow-rate withdrawal rule for acetylene cylinders of 1/7, that means you need an acetylene yclinder (or multiple cylinders manifolded together) of 42 to 140 cubic feet capacity.

Oxygen at 8-12 psi and flow rates of 7-22 cfh.

Thanks for your info MoonRise...

Owwh...I always use low on pressure 5-7psi on ace and oxy 10psi maximum...and i use double the flashback arrestor, 1st on regulator, 2nd in Victor FC100 torch..., this setting is make all happen on my rosebud tip...

I think i must to remove flashback arrestor on regulator side, but still scare to remove it....

Thanks again,

Joel

Acetylene can be scary but you only need a flashback arrestor on the back of the torch. The second one you have on the regulator is just extra restriction and definitely helping cause your rosebud to starve out of fuel. Taking it off will probably completely solve your problem.

Per the Victor manual, 5 psi would be a little too low for the actylene pressure for a #4 MFA rosebud tip. 6-10 psi is what the manual says to use.

10 psi on the oxygen pressure sounds about right (book says 8-12, so 10 psi is right in the middle).

Too little fuel (acetylene) pressure or flow will starve/choke the tip.

So will too much flow restriction in the lines. Too long of a small diameter hose, too many check or flashback valves in the flow path, etc.

If the Victor torch is an "FC" model, it has the flashback and backflow valves built into the torch handle. Right in the manual,

CAUTION
It is not recommended to use accessory flashback arrestors on Victor ® FC torch handles since these devices are already built-in. Excessive flow restrictions may occur.

Also, remember to purge the gas lines before use. One at a time, oxygen first and then the fuel (acetylene), open the valves on the torch handle and let the gas flow for ~ 5-10 seconds.

NOTE : Do this outside or in a well-ventilated area, in a safe area, away from any ignition sources !!!!

All this info is available in the manual you should have gotten with your torch. Or available from the Victor/Thermadyne website(s).
