I'm at a crossroad - I have driveway that goes back to my shop that for the past 20+ years was a stone driveway. A few years ago, I build a house and had concrete put in about 170' from the street but now it is about another 350' to the shop. At the shop I want an apron and some other stuff so I asked a very reliable Asphalt company give me a quote.

He came out Saturday to look over the area and he said that the base is great for the new driveway. Currently about 3-5" of stone with fabric under the stone and above the sand. Actually there is two later of fabric with about 2 inches of stone between the layers of fabric (that is an whole story in itself). He would add 2" of crushed gravel in 2-equal lifts (what ever that means) and compact with steel drum vibratory roller.

Add 2.5 inches of compacted thickness surface asphalt and compact with steel drum vibratory roller.

Hand tamp edges as well as area the roller cannot access

So the size of the entire job is about 4800 square feet and the price is just over $10K.

I really liked the concrete but it would be about 3 times that price and the stones are Ok but the stones are tough on the snow blower.

Again - not a fly by night outfit - do a large percentage of asphalt on commercial lots and highly recommended. Just wanted to get some opinions.

I think you need about 4 inches of asphalt. If it is thinner and you put a big truck truck on it, it will crack.

That driveway will stand above the surrounding yard. Do you plan to fill along it with topsoil or leave it high? Just wondering because I am thinking about getting a quote on mine and I have a good base of about 8 inches of #2 crusher run, 4 inches of #1 crusher run on top of it and clean #1 stone on that. Some of mine would need removal as to not have the driveway higher than the barn floor. It is now level with the yard.

That's cheap compared to what I was quoted for a driveway approach from the road. My area was about 1/10 of yours, though. It came out the same as the quote for concrete.

Our current house has a macadam driveway. Been here 4 yrs. Looked great when we moved in and I started sealing it the second summer. Had a pro seal it last summer. It needs to be ground down and repaved now for who knows how much. this is the last macadam drive I will have. The house we are building now to move in maybe 8 months will be gravel. I like spending $500 on gravel every 3-4 years.

The cost included removal of the current stone driveway so it ends up flush with the shop and concrete driveway after installed.

They also will include the stone to taper it back to the current slope once the asphalt is installed.

Here it is by the numbers:

2 inches x 4800 sf x 135 lbs/cf = 55 tons of crushed rock base
2.5 inches x 4800 sf x 145 lbs/cf = 73 tons of asphalt pavement

55 tons x 25/ton in place aggregate base = $1375
73 tons x $130/ton in place asphalt paving = $9490

Total job: $1375 + $9490 = $10,865

That's what I would estimate as a reasonable cost. Might even add on $500 for the shoulder gravel after completion. Seems to be a sound bid to me.

I have more questions than answers.

Why would they have to add new stone for the taper. You already have stone they are removing.

Are you getting charged to haul off the old stone and for bringing the same or different stone back???

Might be the cheapest way to do it, especially if it's hard to store it on site. I suspect they'll use that stone as part of the 2 inches grading course they put on before the paving.

At the price they've bid, they're not really charging much for extras; it's a pretty fair bid.
