Asphalt Shingles

Good morning to all.
Ok, I went ahead and built the ladder frame for my overhang on the garage that I am building and that's all done.I started putting on the OSB yesterday afternoon and should hopefully be done today with that.
Now,I have never put up roof shingles before so I have a question for you roof proffesionals.What should I expect to pay a roofer to install my shingles?
Its roughly about 4 squares that I have to cover.There is a guy here in town that does this on his days off from his regular job so I would like to have an idea what to expect to pay so that he doesn't take me for a ride.

Well, I can't help with cost but if you're putting up the decking, 4 square of roof is nothing. I did 12 square in 3 days working part time. One of these and a box of 7500 roofing nails plus your materials.

Around here the labor cost has been about the same as material cost.

Roofing is a very competitive business. That said, your project is very small and probably will be a little high on a per-square basis compared to a larger job because things like trip to your job site and labor days aren't divisible since it is so small a job. In other words, it will take them a half a day to do but they will be need to be paid for a full day to get them to do your job instead of a full day job.
You could consider doing it yourself. All you need is a hammer and a staple gun for the tar paper and a chalk line if you want to be particular.

Thanks for your help and advice on this project. I was thinking that since its only 4 squares,maybe I will tackle the job myself and take it as a learning experience.I looked at a video on You tube on how to install the 3 tab shingles.
Just for the heck of it,I think I will get a quote from the guy that does side jobs and than decide whether he or I will do the job.

I agree the job is probably not worth it for the pro's. I built a Dixieline 24X30 garage "kit" many years ago and did the shingles myself. I had helped my Dad do a few rows many years ago, which was my only experience. The main thing is get the 1st course started straight and follow on. You'll be ripping right along in no time.

It's easy to do yourself. Instructions are on the package. If you do pay it should be right around $100 a square roughly plus materials.

Around here 100$ a square would be about right for labor. A larger job will cut the cost per square down a bit and a small one or a roof with lots of valleys or a very steep pitch will drive it up.

Last Saturday we did 30 squares in a bit under 10 hours tear off and replace with 3 guys doing tear off and 3 guys shingling with the tear off guys doing a bit of shingling after they were done with tear off and clean up.

Rent, borrow or buy a nailer, well worth it.

Follow the directions from the shingle manufacturer as far as placement and amount of nails.

Around where I live a good reputable roofing company will charge roughly the same as the cost of the shingles. But there are several roofer guys who will tackle smaller jobs for cash on the weekends, usually the jobs the roofing companies don't really want to do anyway.
