Asphalt surface degrading - fix?

Greetings!
I've got a 20+ YO asphalt driveway that was never good from the start. The crew that paved it I swear was drunk or at least hung-over from the night before. The surface has been top-coated quite a few times (both professionally and by me) but gravel is breaking off the surface most everywhere. For partial compensation of the **** job, they cut the edges and poured a concrete exposed aggregate strip to straighten it out to the street: it was crooked as heck, and added the paved angle at the street that I asked for to start, but wasn't done. Apparently, they used fresh mix for those little pieces because they look great, still.

I have searched the forums for ideas how to remedy this, but I got a heck of a lot of search replies and really don't have time to dig through it all.

Really what I'm looking for are some ideas so when I talk to some local "professionals" I don't get a bunch of smoke blown up my you-know-what!

Well one option is tear out and pour concrete. If that is not feasible, then most likely your left with adding a 2 inch top coat. You can fix cracks, tear out spots that have (alligatored) = lots of small cracks in a section.
I'm kind of in the same boat, I have a 170' x14' some 30 years old asphalt driveway plus a 60 x 40' parking area. I have sealed it several times myself just the parking spot, it has large cracks and alligator area. I would like to do concrete but just the drive would be $10K.
I'm looking into chip seal, same thing they do to county roads to save a buck. Spray some liquid tar/oil and coat with an aggregate or 5/8's gravel. Someone in the neighborhood had it done doesn't look bad and is holding up well.

Company wanted 25,000 to do my 180' driveway. Would have to tear out blacktop then do the concrete. They oil and chipped it for less than $4000. The pea gravel does get tracked around everywhere. I guess I should've rolled it often with the heavy yard roller to set the gravel. The township did the county road in front of my house last month, and it's solid with all the traffic.

We do like the look of the gravel better than the deteriorating blacktop, though.

That looks better than our neighborhood which the city repaved last April.


In fact the 20+yo stuff they paved over was in better condition than the new stuff is after just a few months.
