I am putting camshafts into a Toyota 4 cylinder engine do I need to coat the caps and lobes with 30 weight or do I need to buy special moly lube.
I don't know when the engine will be fired up again, maybe 3 months, maybe 5 years.

In the absence of a specific lube or directions from the cam maker, I would use the best assembly lube I could get, especially if it will be a while before firing it up....I would then mist the cylinders and fill the pan and manually pressurize the oiling system every now and then, and rotate the assemblies at least 90 degrees

else you may wipe cams or bearings upon start up, when you do.

Put lubriplate on. Then it won't wash away

That's what we used on cam bearings, lobes, mains and throws when I worked at a re-man facility some fifty years ago. Engines were sometimes stored for months before being sent out to retailer's customers across western Canada.

Don't use any grease... Lubriplate, white grease, etc... It doesn't break down quickly which means a clogged oil filter element... An oil filter doesn't help anything when oil is going through thy bypass valve.

Moly paste (I used ARP) and a good sticky assy. lube like Torco MPZ.

If it's sitting for five years, pull the v/c's off and manually lube wear points, and prime/rotate the oil pump/engine before starting any fresh engine.

Lubriplate is the best engine assembly lube that has ever been invented. It stays put for a very long time. It is a petroleum based grease so it dissolves in oil once the engine is started. It does NOT plug oil filters. Do not use white grease. It is lithium based it will dry out over time if the engine isn't started and will not dissolve readily in the oil.

Moly is an extreme pressure grease and the best and only camshaft assembly lube you should use. Like Lubriplate, it will stay put for a very long time. The amount used on assembly will however plug the oil filter. I have always used Crane Moly Camshaft Assembly Lube.

Use the 30 weight for the bolt threads.

It will dissolves eventually, not once the engine is started. It will be pushed into the filter and dissolve under fluid pressure, more as the oil warms. Get with the times, lubricating technology has improved since the 60's! LOL

My opinion, nobody has to listen to it. You sound like a smart guy, and I'm not trying to piss you off!

Gentlemen,

I bugs me when people throw out the terms lubriplate and locktite. Each of these company's make hundreds of products so if using the company name you should also state the product number you are referring to. Now if you had said Lubriplate 105 then a proper assembly lube would have been identified.

I believe we were all on the same page as to which product we were talking about, but thanks for clarifying!

I won't get into the ******* much above, but would recommend you change the oil after 1-2hrs of running time after startup. You'll get rid of most not all the moly/lubriplate and the zinc that is used as a lubricant
