been through a few edc knives to say the least

all boils down to Benchmade Axis lock knives
best steels available
pick your blade style

current: 943 Osborne
3.275" blade
530V steel
2.6oz
opens AND closes with the latch and your wrist, not a thumb stud or finger hole

Harrison2;
sorry dude, not in your budget range

I've been carrying a pocket knife since I was 5...my Father always said "always get the best tools you can get....you won't be sorry in the end"

and you know, he was right:thumbup:

Love the look of the spyderco but I found snap on kershaws on ebay :(

id love to spend more on it but too me its not worth dropping $100 on a knife that could fall out my pocket the first day of owning it, same reason I have the older gen 4 iphone with a cracked screen. the second day after fitting my 3rd new screen I cracked it again. I do understand spending money on quality tools but this item seems to fill my needs without breaking my bank, leaving money to spend on other tools.

so im made up with it being a kershaw and having snap on stamped on it :D

after a hour of youtube reviews I think the scallion would suit my needs perfectly, anything else the blade length would be wasted as I purely use it for opening boxes and packaging with the odd bit of string thrown in for good measure.

moving on I came across various colours and handle materials, as much as I love anodizing I hate how it gets scratched and beat up so the plastic handle model appeals to me but its only available in yellow :/

so whats my chances of dying the yellow "glass filled nylon" handle with some strong fabric dye? will it take?

I use my knife for the some of the same things you do. Mine is a made in USA Case from Tractor Supply with a synthetic handle, light as a feather. It has Case 225 L SS marked on the blade near the hinge point. It looked cheesy at first, but it turned out to be an excellent choice, and was less than $20. It is not an assisted opening though, although you may want to look at some of the other models they had that are.

Keyshaw blur in s30v can be found between 56-59 dollars on amazon if you keep your eyes opened. I love mine and use it constantly.

In the $40 range, I'd go with a Kershaw. You can still grab USA models in that price range and I've had pretty good luck with them. For EDC duty - opening boxes, cutting the occasional zip tie, etc - they are hard to beat for the price.

You want a SOG flash I
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DZS82E/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Assisted opening, deep carry pocket clip, non-serrated, and just the right size. I have one that I carry daily. It's AUS8 steel so it's edge retention is good and is easily sharpened.

I have a Kershaw O-So-Sweet assisted open knife and I like the knife itself, but the steel Kershaw uses ***** out loud! it's 8cr13mov which doesn't retain an edge well at all. many Kershaws use that steel, so watch out. AUS8 pwns 8cr13mov any day. What good is a nice looking knife if you have to sharpen it all the time. Buy good steel and you'll be happy with your knife for a long time.

Once you're ready to step it up a notch, Anything spyderco makes in VG-10 (so not the tenatious) S30V, or ZDP steels are exceptional, but not many spyderco's are assisted opening..but they are so smooth its almost like they do. I'd recommend the Delica FFG, the Endura 4 FFG, on the cheaper end, but they are more like $80-90 knives. Benchmade with 154CM steel is exceptional as well. I have a Mini Griptillian I love, but again a little outside your price range. I mention these as next knives when you love your SOG Flash I I recommended, and want more knife

I only buy and use benchmade. Well worth the price imo. Been through many different knives and nothing has held up or been as great as my benchmades. My edc is the serrated mini griptilian.

I carry a kershaw shallot. You can get them all day on eBay for $40. It's a little large knife them most people EDC so if you are looking for something smaller go with the LEEK. Benchmades are nice and if I could quit losing mine every 6
Months I'd pic up one, but with a benchmade you looking at $125.

I do agree that AUS 8 is way better. My Ontario RAT 1 holds an amazing edge while my Cryo dulls a bit quicker.

^This right here, it meets your price range, carries well in the pocket and can stand up to some abuse. It's not a spring assisted opening knife, but it's so smooth that it's hard to notice a difference. I've carried mine daily for a couple months now and it has never let me down. They make several versions; satin finished blade, black blade, partially serrated or plain. Plus they look good with a little wear and take and keep a scary sharp edge!

It's simple to lose a pocket knife, I tend to use mine. I hunt alot and that accounts for a few. I also travel for work and sometimes am stuck outside with a lot of gear on and things get misplaced. Fact of the matter is they get lost, few people haven't lost a pocket knife.

Sog something or other. Honestly all the knives they sell in this range with that feature are pretty similar. I've got a flash, it's okay nothing special blade burrs too easily but it's a great knife and lightning quick open.

40 bucks means imported though (maybe or maybe not china, I'm not sure). They also have those chinese milwaukee knives for something like 25 bucks which look okay (not sure how they'll hold up).
