I buy most of my misc. hardware on ebay from albanycountyfasteners-ny as the seller.
They offer stainless and free shipping on most items, sometimes cheaper than those selling typical zinc plated hardware. I've yet to find any hardware assortments that didn't prove to be a total rip off when compared to a real hardware supplier. Over the decades I've managed to assemble thousands of fasteners of many types.

If it is 1/4" diameter or larger, make sure it is at least Grade 5. Not sure what the metric equivalent is.

I'll second Albany County fasteners on eBay especially for stainless steel fasteners. Stainless is not as strong as Grade 5 so it is not a straight replacement.

I've found very good prices at decent quantities on ebay through the seller warrenfasteningssouth

When the order arrived short some 1/2" x 3" fine thread grade 8 bolts, they sent another packet priority mail, no questions asked. I have had no hesitation to order again and have. I now have picked up a couple of their assortments at a bargain price such as these:

1/4" - 5/8", lengths 1" to 3.5", plus nuts, washers, locking washers.

$79 with free shipping- and that's a heavy package!

Do you know what it weighed? Tracking would show it if it's still valid.

I'm curious because I need more grade 8 stuff, but I get the coarse (what I want) from Fleet Farm for $3.99/lb.

It was shipped in a modified US Priority Mail flat rate box, so weight was not an issue for the shipper. I'd say around 30 pounds if I had to guess now.

Several years ago, I got a good deal form an eBay supplier. Free shipping on orders over $50. I bought a "lifetime" supply of nuts (coarse and fine), flat washers and split lock washers in 1/4, 5/16. 3/8, 7/16 and 1/2. No bolts because there are too many different length and I really don't have the space to store them.

Since then, as I have needed smaller sizes, (#12, #10, #8, #6) I have tried to buy a box of 50 or 100. Overall a great investment, but you will need a bigger way to organize them.

I go to a local supplier and buy in bulk - a hand full or 2 of this size, another handful of that size and so on until I amassed a very good selection. Buying in bulk is So Much cheaper then buying prearranged sets. Hardened Cap Head Allen bolts - $3.50 per lb. Normal Zink plated Hex bolts, nuts, and washers $2.95 per lb. Stainless is a little pricy at $6 - 8 per lb, but still a far cry cheaper then what the local hardware charges

But it does leave the problem of storage because now when I get home I have a box full of medium sized bags of nuts and bolts.

To that I applied 2 remedies - first was this 96 bin organizer I purchased from Northern Tool. I had to order 2 additional sets of bin dividers before I was all done. And I bolted it to the wall just above the footing wall to make it impossible to ever tip over

I have every thing from 1/4" up 3/4" nuts, bolts, allens, and stainless steel

That left the small machine screws - for that I used smaller bins affixed to the wall over my work bench.

Here you can see my son helping to mount them for me

Now one might ask why so much attention to hardware - well make a couple trips to the hardware store buying onesy - twosies or 10 at a time at $.50 to $1.50 for each nut bolt flat washer and lock washer and real quickly you'll know why

You would also be paying the premium that way too

This is where I go locally to buy in bulk

I'm sure you have some thing similar to your local as well

I sell sets like this
Www.winzerusa.com under. Assortments

Look at what you need. Pm me item numbers I will shoot you a price.
If I'm not the cheapest, no harm no foul
Our shipping is a flat $14.85 no matter the weight. But I'm not sure that applies to Canada

Try your local TSC store. They sell by the pound as long as they are same groups ie. plated, regular grade 5,grade 8. Just put bolts washers, nuts in same bag,any size. I grab a bag full each time I am in and now my bolt bin is full.

In the San Diego area, I use K-Surplus in National City.
I wander through the bins of what they have in stock and bag my selections. I take them to checkout where they are weighed and haul my treasures to the garage.

Great stuff in here, I'm overwhelmed by the options some of these sellers have. I need metric for cars, I think I need to pony up and get stainless over zinc.

Stainless is fine until you need to drill it out to remove a broken one. Then you have to buy carbide drill bits to try and drill it out for an EZ-out. Be-careful where you use SS hardware.

Disagree. Stainless will cut easily with HSS drills but one best not go wide open throttle and use heavy pressure to keep the edge cutting and not rubbing in order to minimize the ability to air-harden.

Carbide drills are a mistake in 99% of users' hands because in my opinion it needs to be used in a milling machine with parts clamped and the axes locked up or something rigid like a CNC machine. 99% of the carbide drills I've ever loaned out all with the above warning come back broken, or worse, broken off and jammed down inside something.

Two thoughts have come to mind.

Back in my high school days, a friendly hardware man informed me that I could not afford to buy nuts and bolts by the each. "Buy the full box, you will save money and build a stock to use on future projects."

Stainless is nice, but IMHO, should not be used when strength is a consideration.
