I am needing to get a set of snap ring pliers. I do not use them on too often and don't want to spend a fortune on a set. I saw that Eric on the South Main Auto youtube channel used them and seems to like them. Has anyone used these and do they have an opinion on them? Also what is the warranty on them?

I think we're talking about the same tool but the only portion of the part number on mine left is the last two digits. This is the one with the replaceable adjustable tips right? If so they work great and is a nice quality tool. My only gripe would be the size in certain situations but even then normally adjusting the angle of the tips gets the job done.

Eric O has three sets of snap ring pliers that I've seen:

1. The cam style convertible on his tool cart which are made by Imperial Stride and branded by SK, Snap On, Matco, MAC, ...

2. The Snap On convertible forged series like the SRPC112.

3. The Astro set

In the above linked video you see that there were size problems both with the tips & length. It is a 4 pc set but only "2 sizes" because they are interior/exterior rather than convertible. The difference between interior/exterior is whether or not the tips are open or closed when the handles is squeezed together.

That's why the master sets contain 12 convertible. The master sets have four tip sizes .038, .047, .070, and .090 & each as 0, 45 and 90 degree.

I wouldn't bother with them, better versatile options available for occasional use user like OP and same budget .

I just watched that SMA video where he was using those snap ring pliers. Maybe Astro will see it and come out with some long reach snap ring pliers because of it!

The Astro set is nice. Obviously a Knipex rip-off but if you're going to steal might was well steal from the best and they are 1/4th the price.

I have a pair with interchangeable tips that are quite different from most. They have a screwdriver handle on the back that turns a screw that moves the jaws in and out. lt works equally well on inside and outside snap rings. There is no need to control jaw tension because they stay where ever you set them. You adjust the jaws to go into the holes and then turn in or out, as needed. I think they are KD. I have no idea if they are still made.

Look at gear wrench 2012D I think they are the old KD you speak of.

Can you point out a good master convertible set that won't cost a small fortune.

Looks like it. Thanks for looking it up Mine has a hard red plastic handle, but otherwise the same. Until very recently they used the name KD Gearwrench in some stuff but I think the KD brand is dead and buried.

I have the Snap On ones. This Lang set is the cheapest, most complete set I've seen that look reasonable. It's only $70.40. It mirrors the Snap On set for sizes, not sure if its forged or as strong though. I will say over the years I've found that unless you have a bunch of them you never have the right size/angle, and those cheap ones with the changeable tips are just a headache/waste of money.

The next two I found were Imperial IR-12K

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IR-12K-43R-Internal-External-Retaining-Ring-Plier-Set-/121953122029

for $185 + $9.75 shipping or the SK, SKT7612 but its $265.

There's also this Craftsman set for $121.97 from Summit:

Since I don't have any of these others, I can't comment on performance or longevity but hopefully this gives you some things to look at... Generally the screw type are strong & more durable and tighter than the cam lock ones.

I bought the Astro set last year. I have not used them much, but they are better than the cheap *** interchangeable pair I used to have.

That Lang looks great for a home guy and the price is way hard to beat. Jump on that before they change their mind and add 50$.
Lang makes the thread chasing tap and die sets for virtually everybody, including SO. Before writing them off I would check to see if they are not the same set as SO.

No, TOPTUL makes really nice snap ring pliers the problem is that I can't sell them competitively. Bought a set for myself which I love but I don't think they would move if I had to charge what I'd need to charge to make it worthwhile for me. Also, I need to buy them ten at a time and sadly I feel that would be a lifetime supply so I don't carry them.

This is the core problem with TOPTUL. You're attacked from the bottom by Harbor Freight, in the middle by Gearwrench and from the top by the tool trucks. TOPTUL makes great tools and I sell them for extremely reasonable prices, however, there is a reason Wren and Ultimate Garage gave up on them and that's because there is no brand recognition. People here on Garage Journal might like the idea of great tools for a reasonable price but you need to realize that you're the exception and not the rule. The world as a whole wants as cheap as possible or Snap-On. Sadly, that's the way it is.

I went an looked those up...WOW! The DCBD style are some nice looking snap ring pliers. I would love a 5" and 7" set, but I'm sure they would be absurdly expensive.
