Guys I am at hf and looking at 1/2" impact sockets by Pittsburg. They have 2 versions on the shelf of the same part #. one set is in a metal case and say chrome vanadium on them, look really smoothed and finished. Other set is in a blow molded case and are more rough looking like most impact sockets are. Which to get?

I have the chrome-vanadium set in the metal case - they're just fine for home use. People seem to like the chrome-moly sockets better, I don't know if that's the set you're talking about or not. If it's the more expensive Earthquake set then it gets pretty favorable reviews.

The set that is rough finish doesn't say anything other than the size of the socket with "LF" in front of it, like "LF22mm". These are not the earthquake sockets, both are item 1676.

Compare the wall thickness on the two sets and get the set with the thicker wall.

More than likely a Smartphone or a Blackberry. I've posted from my Blackberry before.

Yeah I have been known to post from my Palm Pre from time to time.

Anyways, I have the deep 1/2 set that comes in the metal case. They say chrome vanadium on them. I have had em over a year and use them every day at work. Not a single issue with them yet.

Yes, was on my iPhone. I ended up getting the rough looking ones in the blow molded case as they only had 1 of each like this - the rest with the SAME ITEM # were the chrome vanadium sets in the steel case. Don't know why this was :headscrat I figured if they may have been moving to the chrome vanaduim style and the others were old stock? Either way, if I got the rough looking ones and decided to return them for the chrome vanadiums, they'd have plenty of them to exchange for.

These were in the sale paper there for $19.99 ea.

Here's a pic of both I took while there. The rough ones look bigger in the pic, but held up side by side they looked to have the same wall thickness, maybe just a *touch* thicker on the rough ones, maybe. Both sockets in the pic were 3/4".

I can vouch for the smooth ones in the metal case, I replaced them years ago with Snap-on ones, and after two months the Snap-on ones looked much worse than the very old HF ones. Go for the ones with the smooth finish and the metal case.

Well, after further review, searching and reading, I am now thinking of returning the socket sets and going for either this one.......

Sunex Tools (SUN5153DD) 29 Piece 1/2" Drive 6 Point SAE and Metric Deep Impact Socket Set
http://www.tooltopia.com/sunex-tools-5153dd.aspx

or both of these..... :Twitch:

Grey Pneumatic (GRY1328RD) 1/2" Dr. 28 Pc. Standard & Deep Fractional Socket Set

Grey Pneumatic (GRY1430MRD) 1/2" Dr. 30 Pc. Standard & Deep Metric Socket Set
http://www.tooltopia.com/grey-pneumatic-1430mrd.aspx

I've read good and not so good on the HF socket sets I posted. I've also read nothing but good on the Sunex and Grey sockets. Now thinking I could spend a little extra now and most likely hand these sockets down to my 2 & 3yr old boys some day.

Dude, they were 20 bucks, use them and upgrade to Proto or Cornwell, etc...later. My HF ones are in great shape 10 years old. Don't sweat it, HF is good for testing the waters for cheap, and having reliable travel tools, or back-ups later on.
