As someone who regularly uses standard sockets with impacts for occasional non repetitive work, I agree using them with 1200 lbs torque impacts is not a good idea.

I think this about sums it up. I use chrome ones occasionally and it's all about how they are used and how often.

Where did the "1200 lbs torque" number come from?

Gray Pneumatic Duo socket sets = Problem solved. One set that are impact rated with the size/weight closer to chrome sockets so you can easily use them on hand tools too. No skipped sizes either. Keep them oiled and they won't rust.

Not so worried about explosion, but don’t like to sack out the drive end8dbdf635b4085c4f88ae3d38222967da.jpg

Put a chrome socket on a hog ring impact and you're going to need to abuse a flat head screwdriver to get it off and may well break the hog ring and/or screwdriver while you are at it. It's just a really bad idea. There's good reason impact sockets don't have detents on all 4 sides of the square drive end like a hand socket does.

If you're going to do it, better keep a few extras of these handy:

If you have an impact with a detent pin anvil it's less of an issue, but then sockets won't want to stay on right. Not a big deal until the socket comes off the fastener while you are still on the trigger and it flies across the room.

I never would put a hand socket on an impact. I consider my hand sockets to be a tool that should outlast me and impact sockets I may well eventually wear out.

I was recently snugging a trailer ball w 1-1/4" shank. It takes a 1-7/8" socket and my HF chrome in 3/4" drive just bounces around and actually mars the flats of the nut.

I ordered a Sunex impact socket 1-7/8" for this now.

So, the bigger it is = the more torque it requires = impact sockets mo betta

I started finding them necessary once I started having chrome plating flakes chewing up my fingers. I have 3/8 and 1/2 impact sockets. 1/4? I've found impact on a fastener that small is just gonna shear it and I'd have been better served just working it by hand.
