I need a set of roll pin punches/pilot punches, found some reasonably priced ones by ATD, anyone know anything about ATD? I never heard of them

Their quality varies depending on the item. They can run the gambit of Chinese or Taiwanese quality. I would only buy an ATD item if I could touch it and see it first hand. I wouldn't buy online or from a catalog but, that's just me. Your results may vary.

I'd buy the Mayhew's.
ATD can range from fairly decent garbage... to just garbage. And I've never held any of their punches, so I wouldn't buy 'em sight unseen.

Krusty, yeah I was looking at the Mayhews, can't justify spending $50 for punches when it's not a high use item for me and I have a bunch of other stuff I need. I bought the cheapies, hopefully they hold up until I can scrounge up a better set. I also need a set of roll pin starter punches (I hate roll pins by the way), I'm going to try to make a set out of regular punches on my lathe.

Thats interesting... we just got a bunch of little Mayhew things in for the Christmas season; looks like they possibly make the prybars for sears too!

The six piece Roll punch set picture clearly shows the "WF" Western Forge marking.
Mayhew definitely makes most of the Craftsman handled pry bars. I believe Wilde has supplied some of the non-Pro red handle bars as well, as an alternate source to Mayhew.

Let's see.. you can buy ADT or Mayhew and not know where the hell they're made, you could buy HF and know that they come from China or you could buy Craftsman (USA) and know that you're getting a set of mediocre (at best) tools. The Craftsmans mushroom just as much and as quickly as the HFs. Take your pick... it's your money.

I needed a fuel injection pressure gauge. I mailed ATD and asked where their's were made. Replay was "...most are made here in the US, with the exception of the ATD 5578, it is made in Taiwan." So, I ordered the other part number. It arrived yesterday. Sticker on the gauge says "made in China". It's best to hold the part in your hand before you put your money down, because sales people on line will lie.

What do you expect? Second, My parts store carries ATD and never bought anything from them that didn't work just fine.

I have a stubby ATD 1/4 air ratchet,I use it once in a while and does it's job.It is actually a rebranded Sunnex 1/4 air ratchet with the ATD name on it.

ATD is a big outfit. About like Napa tools and the stuff is clones or less finished versions or an oem in a different box. They source things that work, some of as good as any. I bought a set of 3/8 wobble extensions, they were great, got another one and some adjustables that are world class and I am a Proto snob.
As for the call to see where it was made, its kind of what you get for being a pain in the ***. Its a knockoff/second level line at a cheap cost.
Bought a pressure pot, bought it for the parts pretty much and figured to toss it after a couple spins if I had to, big jobs and epoxy paint make the cost mute. The thing worked so good still have it. Impact sockets, snap ring pliers.
Something else to consider was the store did a good job of holding on to it till I needed them, sometimes they charge a bit for convenience but that is a competitive market. They are selling parts along with it, the customer needs it now and cant be disappointed.
My auto parts has a sale flier and catalog. They have lots of brand but a whole extensive line of specialty tools. I didn't buy every one they got but its right there if you need it.
I got a PS pulley puller set and its been used a lot, I remember buying it jammed up a long time ago and it got passed around.
I am not in the brake biz but the tool sets were reasonable, I got the bubble, my Bud bought both his there, I had to fix my Blue point, his was used 10X.

More and more of this every day. In some pieces several are the same product. They don't even bother to create another line and inventory for the few they sell in a lower market, no one will know. The Farmhand and Huskey grinders are very good, it isn't that they are less good but there are other models that have more features or power in some cases but there is a generic white box somewhere with the same thing in it or under a store brand.
I bought an ocilating tool recently. Menards did have an ultra cheap model but the Promax version at 40 was the same as the 90 or 100$ brand name, was nicer, came with a case and some blades.
In my experience atd is ok for the price.its some where in between harbor freight and sk.some can be good and some can be ****, the guys I worked with had atd ball joint press and that thing made them a lot of money. Most of their tools are atd and survive in the shop enviornemt.
