I think Atha got the numbers after Stanley bought them? So it's more of a Stanley thing then Atha, as pre purchase there was no numbering.

It’s right down to the wire. The 1912 catalog at the link above has numbers, and Davistown museum says Stanley bought them in 1913. Looks like they, Toolarchives, etc all reference back to the DAT, Directory of American Toolmakers, pre1900
