Athol 114A

I have an Athol -marked Athol Mass Company vise marked 114A but cant find any info on it online,how old what its worth,the jaws are 4" and jaws looks like a file on inside,any info would b greatly appreciated,thank you

The Athol Machine & Foundary Co. name change happened in 1930. They ceased operation in 1963. Your vise was made somewhere in that range. Without pictures, I cannot be anymore specific.

Value is whatever someone will pay for it. Again, without pictures that show condition, wear, repairs, missing parts, etc. there is no way to even guess what someone will pay.

All of that said, if you're here just for valuation, you're better off doing an advanced search on Ebay to see what people paid for the vise that you have.

HORSE: WELL SAID. are you sure Athol didn't start prior to 1930?

PT: yes pictures and better description of condition would help for value and if you are going to stick around GJ you might go in your GJ profile and put in your location and maybe click on Avatar and download a picture that will show up under your handle like my Bison made of scrap steel does.

They did start earlier than 1930 but under a slightly different name (1905 Athol Machine Co.). The vise that this guy is trying to price for sale was surely made during the 30 or so year period mentioned above.

PT: you certainly didn't offend anyone. it's just that we get a lot of people making one or two posts asking for the value of something they found for a few pennies and want to know what they can sell it for. sort of a test if you are a real person that wants to use the forum as more of a continual learning site rather than to just ask for free help.

Horse's idea of finding value on Ebay's solds is one way of checking the value and if you find something and want to put it on Craigslist i've usually discounted that value 20-25% to avoid the hassles of shipping and the fees involved in selling via the auction site.

sounds like you might have an old keeper and we'd love pictures even if you already own more than a few vises and need to sell this one.

Not offended in the slightest. As DrivesItFar has pointed out, we get a lot of Internet carpet baggers passing through. I figured that if you were one, I gave you the proper place for valuation info. If you're a tool guy like the rest of us, you were given a welcome.
