I have a Athol 613 vise of my grandfather's that I am trying to put back into service. The base seems to require notching of the bench or an additional bracket to affix. Any ideas?

Either notch your bench or do as others have done which is to get a chunk of 2x12 or similar, notch that piece, and then screw the piece of wood to your bench.
That way if you ever want to move the vise to a different spot, you won’t have a big ugly notch on the edge of your nice workbench.

BTW, you have a classic old vise and being from family makes it all the better! It looks to be in excellent condition for a vise that is probably 100 years old.

My latest restoration is an Athol 614 that I just finished yesterday. Mine has no angled portion...just square it up to the edge of the bench and bolt it down. But it does have the internal horseshoe shaped clip to retain the main screw. Newer models have a spring between 2 washers to compensate for wear and reduce backlash.
Does yours have the clip held in place with one screw inside the dynamic jaw?

Yes, mine has the clip held by a screw.

I'll get to work on a bracket!

Ha and I have a 613 1/2 :D

Same setup

Guess what you have to do would all depend on your specific workbench and how it is built really. :headscrat If the face frame is 2x material ya would have to be notched to and the wood block is an easy and convenient solution.

I have a plywood top work bench that the front face frame board is only a 1x4 across the 2x legs so it can bolt up by just drilling the top. A piece 2x stretcher attached behind the front legs gives the frame strength and connects with the 2 x side braces to the back legs

I had the angle notched out on a mill. It wasn't long after they all did away with that extra piece.
