Athol 614 1/2 rebuild

I just picked up a decent Athol 614 1/2 vise off craiglist. It is not the best score ever, but $80 for old American iron is not to bad. I've been searching for weeks and good vises are rare in my area of Virginia, actually good machine tools of all types are rare around here.

I'm going to be starting the standard GJ rebuild, repaint, and return to faithful service. Pictures and rebuilt to forthcoming.

The only problem I've identified so far are the jaws are a little worn. I think I can clean them up with a file, but I would like to replace them. Anyone know where to find replacement jaws for a vise like made in 1910?

I believe Athol vises have forged jaw inserts, so you can't replace them.

A file and some elbow grease will get the job done.

Not all of them. http://dayid.org/mediawiki/index.php/Athol_Vise lists them as replaceable. I haven't looked at it in depth, but they appear to be removable.

Jaws are fixed. Oh we'll. The fixed side is completely smooth. I think I'm just going to have a smooth jawed vise.

I made another mistake being in a hurry. I missed a huge glaring issue. The slide is broken missing huge chunk. No clue how I missed something so obvious.

Oh we'll it still works. The question is is it worth trying to manufacture and brave pieces onto the slide.

Finally with the pictures. Picasaweb was such a great tool. Why did they have to go and screw it up?

Maybe others can chime in with more knowledge about brazing the slide together....

But if it were mine, I'd customize it a little bit by cutting that slide and lead screw down right after the break point. Very seldom do I open a vise that much to use...it just gives you another reason to buy another vise

And making the jaws completely smooth on it would be cool too. That's just my 2 pennies, but alas, it is your vise...do what makes you happy!
