Was wonder if its normal for the jaw that retracts to be a little loose, if I move side to side its loose, is this normal, it works perfect, open and closes and clamps tight as heck, ......???

Yotie: first of all welcome to Garage Journal and glad to have another guy that likes to own an old vise and do what it takes to make it work like it did when it was new maybe 70 or so years ago.

Athol vises are usually very good vises and sounds like maybe all you need to do is tighten up the pin holding the vise nut. is it loose after you take the dynamic jaw out? or maybe ad a spacer on the main screw to fix it.

good luck

It's absolutely nowt to worry about. Just general wear, but won't affect its abilities in any way or form.

Different vises have different clearances, but its' not uncommon of there to be some clearance side to side. I've got a Reed that was so tight it got rusted into place... Someday I'll get'er busted loose...
