I picked up a cool Athol Vise today. It's a woodworkers vise or coach makers vise. The previous owner put a plate on the bottom to lock the quick release. I took it off and the Quick release works just fine. It's a model 413 1/2 and has 3 1/2" jaws. I paid a little more than usual but it's not something you see every day. I thought you guys might like seeing it. Thanks

I have the same Athol vise I picked up at an auction. However, I need to do a fixing to it. When I tighten the jaws they slip. It has a, I’ll call it a half nut on the bottom portion of the screw that is worn. I’d to replace it but I’ll probably never find a replacement part. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might repair or replace this part? It’s pretty unique in its design. Thanks

No worries, chances are that it's absolutely repairable. Before we go there, take some good photos for us. You've got a Simpson patent vise that goes all the way back to the 1870's. I've got a Simpson vise as well, but your "coachmakers" model appears to have an extra mechanism for the "quick-release" feature.

Here's an 1889 Athol Machine Co. catalog scan of your vise, 1st generation model.

I have stationary model. I didn’t realize that it was that old. Wow. I’ll have to take some good pictures tomorrow as I’m out an about tonight. I’d love to fix it. I like to try and restore things the best I can. I was thinking I’d have to go to a machine shop to get a new piece made. Of course, it would have to be a special steel.
