Hello fellow garage men and tool lovers. I got the iron fever bad. Just bought an athol 624 and a prentiss 53&1/2 and a third clamp vise for $70. I finally paid the fabled $1/lb rate that old timers claim is the going rate for used vises. Gave them a spray of wd40 to loosen them up as both swivels are rust locked . How should I proceed to free them up with out damage?

$1 a pound is a myth, but a good marketing tool if you need to tell the seller something. i suppose if it's for parts or was heading to the scrap pile then per pound pricing might benefit your thinking or negotiating. for good old cast iron especially stuff that weighs over 100 pounds or that's rare and in great shape might cost more than a few dollars per pound.

maybe you didn't read the vise thread or maybe i haven't given the WARNING, BEWARE, CAUTION, HOLD ON TO YOUR WALLET POSTS?

yes the vice for vises is a real thing and even though i'm trying to reduce my quantity i think all i've managed to do is sell a few while buying a few cause DANG they are good old tools.

cheers and i really like ATHOL vises and bigger the better!! how much does your 624 weigh? guessing 60 pounds?

I have a 53 1/2 as well, very cool looking vise. And I use mine a lot for smaller stuff. Yours is missing the "hardy" that would go in the hole in the top...no big deal as it's not really that useful in my opinion on a small vise. Great Gets!

The Athol is industrial quality, but the others are the local hardware store quality exposed screw models. Nearly every maker of industrial quality vises also made a budget line. Be aware, at least in this area, exposed screw vises, no matter what the label, don't sell quickly and don't bring much.

Billy: some models of the 624.5 were sold without swivel bases or it could have broke. the nice thing about that design unless yours is different is that any Athol or Starrett vise has 3 mounting holes to mount it as a non swivel so if you can't find a swivel you can mount it to a bench or just make a stand for it so you can have 360 degree access. otherwise try starrett for another option, but both companies have quit making vises for years now.

i also RARELY see an Athol or Starrett vise broken or damaged so an extra swivel base would be even harder to find.
