Greeting GJ members,
This is my first post. Before I get to my Athol and Prentiss, Id like to say "thank you very much" to all the members of GJ for sharing so much wisdom and expertise. For years I have entering many google search questions about various home repair issues and more often than not, the answer was provided by someone here. Im sure there are MANY more like me who have been coming here for years and having their questions answered but never took the time to register. Well, I finally did. Thanks again.
My 87 year father, who still tinkers around in his garage, offered me his Athol 614 that he bought "very used" in 1964. Ill post the before and after pics. Truly, these vises were made to last and were almost comically overbuilt by todays standards. I am indebted to the technique shared on GJ on compressing the Athol main screw spring to get the cotter pin back in, the 3/4" PVC pipe technique. Made that process a breeze. (must be schedule 1120 though, sch40 is too thick)
Anyway, restoring the Athol gave me "restore another vise" fever and I bought a Prentiss locally. Prentiss is not too common in So Cal so I was pretty happy. As I was breaking it down I found two distinct stamps of "USN" on the static jaw. Can I assume this was a Navy vise during WWII? also on the slide is marked "1682"
Someone posted a question about their Prentiss swivel handle and thought it had numbers on it. My swivel handle pretty clearly says PRENTISS on the swivel handle.
