Athol Starrett 923 Bench Vise

I just picked up this Athol Starrett 923 bench vise. The guy who posted the ad on Craigslist was selling a workbench that had this vise and a small grinder mounted to it. There were no photos. When I called he said he was moving in two days and needed to get rid of a bunch of stuff. When I saw what he had I wasn't interested in the bench itself or the grinder, but the vise caught my eye. So I asked him what he wanted for the vise alone. He said $20.00, and I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. If I'm not mistaken the vise looks like it still has the original paint from the factory on it, and the surface rust should clean up pretty easily.

I know that Starrett bought Athol back in 1905, so it was manufactured after that year. But when? Does anybody know how to estimate a manufacturing date for this vise?

Yes, good score. That vise has had very little use and only slight neglect. Easy to shine off the surface rust.

The starretts got the 92X codes in the mid 70s. So it's from there until they stopped production (90s?). Very solid vise and great score.
