Well after following a garage build thread over on the other sub forum, 50's Craftsman garage, full of old restored tools. I got up the nerve to finally pickup a drill press for my shop. Im in the process of swapping motors in my Jeep and needed a solid drill. I picked up what appears to be an Atlas 1010. A PO swapped out the bench top column with a floor column, so my quest is for a compatible floor column. Suggestions would be welcome as for what might work. Or even something to help stabilize the current base. All of the parts are there and things seem solid. No slop in the quill bearings or pulley, just a tiny bit on the motor pulley. It also has what appears to be an original, or period third pulley. The motor is a GE 3450 so Im also looking for a 1725 rpm motor to get slower drill speeds. The wiring is a bit scary so I can't really test it out as is. Suggestions are welcome as this will be my first restoration. Luckily there is almost zero rust and I see only one minor piece missing, a nut for the lever, and one minor piece broken, a screw on the spring tension knob.

Cool drill press! How about some more pics of that third pulley setup, does it have bearings?

Nice find!

While you are looking for a Floor model base, (which may be hard to find) bolt it to a 1/2" steel plate spreader so it is stable.

www.vintagemachinery.org is a great place to start if you get into vintage machinery restoration. There is a wealth of information on this site. Beware however that it can quickly become addictive and before you know it, you'll be scanning Craigslist on an hourly basis looking for the next piece of machinery to restore. I've been restoring vintage Delta/Rockwell and Powermatic machinery for about 8 years and absolutely love it. Nothing manufactured these days can come close to the quality of these vintage pieces of machinery.

I too am looking at doing a restoration on an Atlas, I am doing some research, at this point. I like your third pulley set up. I have not seen that one on any Atlas Drill Presses, but it does look original.

The added pulley was an option, also available from Sears on the Atlas/Craftsman DP's, close to identical to this one.
