Hey, guys. My name is Charlie, and I figured the best way to introduce myself would be to post up, show what I've got, and ask a question or two. So, without any further interruptions...

I picked this up off Craigslist along with a (homemade?) 5 foot wood lathe for $150 total. ($50 for the press, $100 for the lathe.) I don't know much about it other than that it's an Atlas 1420, it runs really smooth and quiet, it belonged to a machinist who took good care of his stuff, and it just happens to be painted the same color green that my grandfather's lathe was painted in the 40's when it was retooled for the war effort.

I've been googling, but haven't found much yet.. Anyone care to share any info, or your stories about this model of press, or Atlas presses in general?

Beautiful press, 930dreamer! It's funny, that color blue is close to the color of some rustoleum paint I saw today and said, "the drill press would look nice painted that color.."

How do you like yours, if I might ask? I haven't had the chance to use mine yet, unfortunatley. Heck, it's still in the back of the truck. (Working 12 hour days makes it hard to do a lot..) we did turn it on at the sellers house for a quick test, and it sounded wonderful, but without anything to drill, I'm not entirely sure about it. I guess I'll know tomorrow! I took my machinist friend (who was with me when I picked it up) to the Home Depot today to get some accessories (drill press vise and some good bits.) while there, I showed him the original plan before I checked craigslist: a $130 Ryobi benchtop drill press.. His choice of words was, "I think I need to listen to you more when you tell me to check craigslist for things.. This piece of junk is really 3 times (with tax) the price of what you payed for yours?"

I picked up an Atlas bench top drill press at an estate sale this week too. It runs super smooth and quite. It weighs a ton too.It needs to be cleaned up.

Nice! I think I'm going to keep my eyes open for a benchtop model if I like this 1420. It would be nice to have one of each, you know?

Strange to see this thread pop up, I just found instructions for a 1010 atlas drill press, W80 Shaping attachment and atlas WIB mortising attachment if chuck1225 or 930dreamer need it.

I don't know if the instructions are together or not, but I'd be interested in the press instructions, if no one else is. I got to use it tonight! It works really well, and drilled a decent hole in a piece of railroad track that has been laying in the barn for years.
