Greg Smith Equipment has a special this month with their 6" Atlas bench vice on sale for $80. Their description of the vice is pretty vague, so I thought I would ask you guys if you know anything about the Atlas brand and more specifically, their bench vices.

Thanks,

Looks importo to me, find an old Wilton or Columbian machinist vise used locally for the right money, either one will never disappoint you. My 2 bits.

I was looking around our RMA area today. They have an Atlas mounted on a bench in the back. "MADE IN CHINA" was on the label. Looked better that the colum ian and chinese wiltons at HD. I think some of the Wiltons are still US made.

Both Columbian and Wilton have a lower quality import vise with their name attached. You do not want either one of them. Get an OLD ie USA made used version machinist type, not mechanics of either brand, and as stated earlier, life will be sweet!

Stick with a US vise even if you have to buy it used, you will be far ahead. A vise is not a good place to skimp.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the input. I am in no hurry to buy another vice, so maybe I'll hit the garage sales this spring and will luck into one.

Btw, how do a machinist vice and a mechanics vice differ?

There is a marked difference between them in fit, ( how much slop or play there is between the moving jaw to the fixed), weight, strength, and in general durability. A quality (usa) Wilton or Columbian vice will withstand an ungodly amount of abuse that will destroy most lesser vices. A quality machinist vice new will usually cost 3-4 times or more what a comparable sized mechanics vice will cost, that is why I suggest finding a good used one. When I bought my Columbian, the swivel base was missing. The replacement base plus the cost of the vice put me at a little over $100.00 for a vice that has seen alot of hard use (new the same vice is about 4-5 hundred). There are better bargains out there on used machinist vices if you are lucky enough to stumble onto one. Go to your local industrial supplier and look at a mechanics/general purpose vice, then look at a Wilton or Columbian, you will see what I mean, no comparison, you will buy it once and it will outlast you!

Mark, when comparing the photo in your link to the photo in my Greg Smith Equipment link, I don't think so. I does not appear that the India company's vice has an anvil for starters.

UB, I did a little internet searching for info about machinist vices and it looks like there are a few different styles. Here is one that I would use on my drill press. Looks nothing like the bench vices that I see on the shelf at Northern Tool.

I'll get it figured out. :lol_hitti
