Attach a detached garage?

Hello!

What are my options to attach my detached garage? I have read about breezeways etc. what would be the best option? how much would it cost?

My preferred option is to build something that connects our kitchen door to the detached door somehow giving us a covered pathway to the garage.
Is this an option? does this require city/codes approval?

Thanks for your help.

That's a pretty open ended question. How far is it and what is your personal prefference? A breeze way will work or you could go with my personal favorite, more garage stalls! Either option will vary in cost, depending on size and type of construction and mateials used.

My preference is to build a closed wall structure (like a tunnel) between the kitchen door and the garage door (about 20 feets) so that we can walk between the home and detached garage through the enclosure. Is this an option?

Also while deciding, check with your town zoning. They may want an enclosed "breezeway".

Can some one here tell me how much will a wall tunnel cost? I don't want a breezeway, breezeway is not the same as an enclosed entry point to the detached garage.

c'mon utharay..read the prior posts. I realize you only have 4 posts and they all are in this thread..but that is like asking "how much will it cost me to build a house" or "how much will it cost me to buy a car." It'll cost you nothing if you get donated materials and supplies and build it yourself. It'll cost you as much as you want to spend, depending on __________ (you fill in the blank)

And there are alot of unknowns. In colder climats there are frost footings on the house and more than likely the slab on the garage is floating. Cities/townships are all different, but most won't allow for these structures to be "atached" and then there is even fire rated walls and doors. All of it is so much up in the air. You would probably be best of to find a good contractor or do alot of research.

Build an enclosed mudroom between the kitchen and the garage with a door to the outside. While your at it, tap into the kitchen plumbing and install yourself a bathroom (toilet, sink, shower) and have the bathroom back up to the garage so you can put a slop sink on the garage side. Add heat to the mudroom from the house ductwork. The structure also gives you the opportunity to run in additional items to the garage like gas, more power, phones, data, etc from the house. I would say you would need a permit. Cost, you need to determine what you want.

Check your local zoning/planning dept for this. Converting a detached garage into an attached may trigger the necessity to upgrade the fire rating on your garage structure. You don't want a garage fire or hazardous fumes reaching your home.
I am working on enclosing an open 12' breezeway. In this case I'll be using french doors and windows to fill in the enclosure, as there is already a roof and floor structure.
