Planning on getting a shell built and finishing the interior myself, is it worth getting a drawing from an architect/draftsman ?

It's a 30x30 addition, the chimney and veneer are in the process of being removed and its just block wall to add to, no restriction and set back is at 37 off the end of home. The entire home and garage will be stucco after done.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't. I'd do my own drawings, which, while not an architect or engineer, I've done a lot in my career. I solve design problems in the drawing process. But not the only approach.

If you're having a contractor do the work, it may be in your best interest to have a professional building designer - architect, engineer, or not - so there is a basis for any disputes.

It's worth having a draftsman with specific plans and dimensions, absolutely. It gives you a "spec sheet" to abide by and if it doesn't match the spec sheet, you shouldn't pay for it.

How else we gonna know what LVLs are going in (assuming this is a garage)... Or anything about any loaded framing?

I think architects are artists. But what you're after are "blueprints" - at least in my mind.

Part of it here depends on what is required for permitting. If that was being built here, it'd need an engineered foundation, a foundation plan, a framing plan, a topographic view with setbacks, etc.

When I added an attached garage and later a room addition, the locality had blank forms with fill in the blank sketch details such as insulation type, board type and sizes, etc... I also had to attach a site plan and foundation plan which was pretty simple. I have an LVL over a 16' wide door opening I believe the lumber yard or beam manufacturer specified for me.

If it is going to be a complicated build with lots of architectual features, then having an Architectual / Engineering firm do a design is a good idea.
