So I've been wanting a garage for a while, and I'd like to build it this summer. Right now, behind my family room is a patio, and after that is my inground pool. I have 24' from the family room wall to work with. Rather than tear up my patio concrete, I'd like to do a pole barn type of garage, attached to my house. I know that wall can't have windows looking into the garage and also must be a fire barrier. Construction wise, how deep must my posts go into the ground? I believe they should be spaced 8' apart, but how far apart should the trusses be? What other things must I consider while Im planning this? I would be vinyl siding it when done.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Around here (mid state pa) code requires poles to be sunk 48" minimum.. My poles Are 8' on center and my trusses are 4' apart.. My width (span is 30'). My trusses had to be designed to withstand a 40psf snow load and my truss spacing and design were approved by a proffesional engineer. My girts are 2x6 at 24" on center (due to 12' ceilings the girts could not be 2x4...my truss headers are 2-2x10's sandwitched on the inside and one 2x10 on the outside. If you use southern pine structural 2x12's you could get away with one on the inside and one on the outside (to withstand the snowload i mentioned....Thats my .02

Thank you for the reply. I think what I need to do is have the proposed garage drawn up by an engineer. That way I can hopefully cover all the necessary codes and laws that I'm more than likely unaware of. I've been trying to read up on the whole thing as much as possible, I'm far from a builder but fairly confident that I can do it.

The good thing is I can use this as a "stepping stone" to build my next project, a large pole barn. I rent a shop about 20 mins from home and I'd like to have it at home instead.
