Attaching threaded rod to a ceiling beam ?

How do you attach threaded rod to a ceiling beam ?

I saw the idea of using threaded rods to support the front of a shelf on this board. Generally there's some lumber across 2 ceiling beams and it's threaded in there with a washer.. I don't have that luxury (only one beam I can use, don;t want my shelf that deep). I don't want to drill through a vertically laid ceiling beam, too much room for error ! Isn't there some sort of bracket that might wrap around a ceiling beam and allow attachment of threaded rod ?

If not I'll just use lumber, I was hoping for something more discrete like the rod...

For giggles this is the "new" garage shelf I inherited w/ the new house. Total ****, was about to fall on my cars ! (edit: pic not showing, webserver down)

You can find plenty of specialized brackets, but just about anything you can bolt to the side of the beam will work:

Look in the plumbing section of any big box or go to

a plumbing store. You will find ready made pipe hangers

that will fill your needs. They have holes for attaching

to a vertical surface, and a threaded hole for all-thread

that is in the horizontal plane.

I used a simple angle bracket and 1/2" hardware. Because I was drywalling over it, I also used a barrel nut so that I could attach the threaded rod after the drywall was up.

You can use pipe hangers, two screws and then thread your rod into it.
You can also use a double sided bolt/lag with a barrel nut.
One side is a lag bolt, the other side is plain bolt threads.
Bolt it into the beam, put the barrel nut on, then thread the rod into it.

Lots of easy ways to do it.

I like these, depending on the situation. Thread 3/8 rod in and a couple of screws. I usually add a nut to the top of the rod, above the mount. HD and loews both stock them.

Menards has these two. I have used them several times for supporting shelves.
