I am considering creating some sort of attic lift that could have a basket or base on it to lift stuff up for storage. I was thinking of maybe working with some of the HF electric hoists. Any ideas or examples?

This youtube video was basically what I was thinking of doing:
You can buy 'em built and ready to install for around, (very) roughly, $2k.

That looks interesting. I was thinking kind of in that direction but maybe not so large of a basket/frame and some sort of lock once it's up for storage

How much is the most weight you want to lift?

If you want a cheaper option get a pulley system going. Multiple pulleys, more weight more pulleys small ones are pretty cheap at HF and such. You could make some laminated plywood pulleys for next to nothing

I have a winch mounted on a unistrut trolley. Mines in the center of the garage so baskets are out. On the flip side I can lift heavy things.

Probably not a huge amount, maybe a bin at 60-70 pounds at most

I have the 880 pound hoist from HF mounted on 12' of linear heavy duty barn door track via a heavy duty stainless ball bearing trolley. I can vertically lift mowers, tires, snow blowers, etc. into the garage attic through a 4'X4' opening and then easily slide things over to wherever I need to place them. Also, I didn't want to be restricted to a cart or cage so I've been using a 20' 10K capacity tow strap, which has various loops tied into it, which easily allows for various strapping scenarios.

Make sure to purchase a hoist and not a winch. The winch will not have an internal brake. Also it's best to go overkill on the hoist you buy so that it's not being stressed by the load.

I just bought a Racor PHL-1R for my garage attic. I'm pretty excited to get it mounted.

I'm working on my garage ceiling next week to beef up the joist (currently 4' OC spacing) to install T&G pine boards, 30" wide ladder, and the Racor lift.

Here's what I did. HF hoist hangs from 1/4" plate bolted to steel purlins in the top of my building. I use it to raise a platform where I load the stuff going to or from the attic. Keeps me from climbing up and down stairs all the time. When not in use, it sits in the attic.
Picture loaded sideways, rotate CW once when viewing.
