I need a little input for putting storage above my garage. I have a 3 car garage 22x22 with a wall separating a 12'6 x 22 single garage. The joist are 2x8's in the 22x22 garage and 2x6's in the 12'6 garage. Joist run parallel to the length on both garages with the 2x6s spanning the 12'6" distance. I dont think I can do anything with the bigger garage but thought it wouldnt be too hard to beef up the smaller garge with the shorter span. My thought was to sister 2x8s to the 2x6's or get some engineered 2x6's and sister those together so I wouldn't have to remove the strongback. Getting the 2x6's in would be a lot easier. Ok any one have some input?

Please help w/ the build. Trusses? If so they have a load rating. What is access? On center span? What will be stored?

I really like Steel reinforcement if you can figure that out. Used in a lot of home renovations.

Don't do it. 28 years from now you will find yourself planing to move and you will have to pass along or throw most of what you have stored away. Doesn't feel like you put that much **** up there (a little at a time) until you start having to bring it down and figure why you saved it and what to do with it now. Ask me how I know, LOL.

^^^^^ This. Having cleaned out a few attics in my time, I totally agree. Don't. It seems like all the low priority, hoarder junk ends up in an attic, soon to be forgotten. Then some day someone has to carry it all back down.

Everything on rafters are hand framed with 2x6s. All the joist are 16 oc. There is a 2x6 on ridge with rafters attached to that. I will be using a pull down ladder so only plastic totes with mostly decorations and some books. I agree people just move there junk from one storage place to the other but trying to make wife happy. We downsized and have more stuff than house will hold.
Thanks for the help.

There's your answer. Keep downsizing. Pitch-out all that ****. You don't need it. And you 'don't have the space.' Who blabbed to the wife about sticking this stuff in the ceiling crawlspace? That's the 'Enabler.'

'Not sufficient structural strength, a fire hazard, draws vermin and cockroaches, yadda-yadda.'

Decorations don't weigh-much, books do.
