Attic Venting?

Technically havent bought it yet, but am about 30 days from closing.

There is a detached 2 car garage with a loft. There is a set of really tall attic stairs to the loft (I think the ceilings are 10'+). In the loft at each end are giant open louvres.

The question:

Does the attic need to be vented like that if it has normal soffets and a ridge vent?

The problem is that no matter how much you insulate the wind can whip right through the attic and I won't be able to keep my Snow Globe collection up there in the winter :bounce:

Also threw this up on the garage journal, but I like to pull info from everywhere.

If the area already has perforated soffit panels and a ridge vent, the louvers are really overkill and can be sealed off.

The attic is going to be cold whether you have end vents or not. Any wind blowing through will not make that much of a difference. 32f and below will cause freezing. In the summer you want the attic vented well.

Store your snow globes in the house. Between heat and cold it can't be good for any plastic items anyways.

Care should be taken when evaluating roof/attic venting systems. With soffit and ridge vent systems care must be taken so that airflow is not shortcut-ed resulting in poor roof deck temp control or other areas where moisture could build up.

I'm of the opinion that more is better, and the roof should only be used to keep the rain and snow out. I've got soffit vents and gable vents and roof vents.

My building has soffit and ridge vents. I also installed a fan on the gable end to help keep the heat down in the summer. It's controlled by a thermostat that I keep set at 100 degs.

thanks guys I was just wondering.

I dont plan on storing anything up there that I wouldn't store in a shed. I had just never seen the giant louvres, 2'X3', at each end before.

When you insulate if you use baffles to maintain air flow from the soffit vents to the ridge vent then you shouldn't need the gable vents. You'll need deep rafters though to get enough insulation and the baffles all in there. If it's just for storage, you might leave the gable vents and build hinged doors for them so you can close them off during the winter and open them during the hot season to better cool a hot attic space.
