Attic venting

I have the round whirly-style attic vents on my garage and house. The question is – should I place covers over them during the winter?

The garage ceiling is mostly insulated (R-19 batts), there are a couple areas between a few of the rafters without insulation. The heat source is a small wood stove that I fire up as needed. I’m guessing I will cover this one to limit heat loss.

The house is fully insulated (blown-in f’glass). The heat is via nat gas fueled forced air. If I cover the whirlys do I create any problems like mold from built up moisture? Or, if I leave the whirlys uncovered do I lose more heat out the vents?

Input appreciated.

Thank you,
L

I'm far from being an expert, but it seems to me you need to keep the air flowing in the winter, too. You'll run the risk of condensation, resulting in wet insulation. Wet insulation is no insulation. Then when it warms up, you'll get mold.

IMHO - No. Any moisture from the house that escapes past the insulation should be vented. Also, all kinds of weird things can happen if the upper roof is warm from trapped heat and the eaves are cold from the vents. Nobody plugs their static vents, I would not cover whirlys either.
