Question for you guys that use magnetic storage racks... (like storing wrenches on the inside of the top lid)...

What do you put between the magnet and the box, to prevent damage to the paint, but something that still allows the magnet to work?

I imagine when you roll the cart around, or each time you open the lid, the rack must move at least a little bit, and scratch the paint?

I've seen some magnets that don't have that protective rubber coating on them.

Nothing. As long as both surfaces are clean what's to scratch? I don't think mine move much and if the lid gets scratched, so be it. It's only an issue with the first scratch. After that, it's fair wear and tear.:bounce:
You know the old saying, no scar, no story....

Those HF tray that you posted do have rubber coated magnet and unless you put 10# in there, I'd safely say that they ain't moving.

Some have rubber coating, but that also greatly decreases the magnetic hold. I have two kobalt racks, and they can't hold squat before sliding down.

If a rack didn't have any padding, I'd glue some thin gasket material on there.

Depends on the magnets. Some are plastic or rubber coated or are polymer magnets and will tend not to scratch unless dirt and metal chips become embedded in the surfaces. I will usually lay a piece of thin clear packaging tape across the surface if the magnets are strong enough, and the potential is there for scratching from metal surfaces.

It's also because they don't use good neodymium magnets. I bought some ultra-strong neodymiums from www.kjmagnetics.com and beefed up those racks.

As for padding, I've been meaning to glue some thin felt to the backs of my magnets. Since I use ultra strong magnets the hold isn't much of a problem.

the only thing you have to worry about scratching with are things like magnetic bowls, because you take them on and off all the time, and they are going to be dirty.
