I just have no clue what people are thinking when they bid on items that are clearly way above retail. This seller even provides a link to sears.com that has the box for $60 in store... So people are bidding at $71 with $18 shipping. Leaves me dumbfounded.

I myself have been caught in auction fever but not on a clearly over retail item.

Anyone else get the fever?

In my area there are a lot of older retired mechanics, pipe fitters, machinist etc. from the local auto, chemical plants etc. and numerous farms such that there is a lot of older tools on the local market. You just hit up in the good weather the estate and garage sales plus the big flea markets. I know what I can get things for that I "like" (not necessarily need) locally and E-bay is selling for probably double (non truck brand tools) compared to the prices I can barter locally at the sales & markets. Perhaps I am just cheap :bounce:

As someone else said before perhaps it depends on what you have available to you locally, though Sears is everywhere. You would think if you have access to a computer for E-bay then you could easily order on line at Sears. Perhaps overseas bidder ? though shipping would be higher.

I bought two of these at Christmas, one for each of my twin girls, when they were on sale at Sears for $39. One of them was even an NOS, made in USA box, the other was hecho en Mexico. Shoulda bought every one they had.

I go to at least 2 auctions a week, and you will see it sometimes. Craftsman wrench sets often bring big money. Brand new products can go for more that retail.

Since I'm buying to resell, I rarely pay too much and never close to retail but you can still get caught up in the moment and pay a little too much. The worst is when you buy something you didn't inspect well enough and find out it is broken or you have 2 SO sockets and the rest are SK. You live and learn.

I find most of the auctions I go to you see many of the same buyers who are educated bottom feeders. When they quit bidding, don't go much higher. The exception is if you are buying to keep, then you can spend a little more.
