Auction Haul Today

I won 11 out of 21 lots in an auction of some miscellaneous machine shop tooling that ended last night.

I got somewhere around 200 end mills, ranging from 3/4" down to some micro-tiny bits:

An interesting assortment of odds and ends, including a pair of jack screws:

A couple of blade arbors:

More end mills:

Some reamers and a couple of Heli-Coil insertion tools:

A Stanley double-ended marking gauge:

A knurling tool:

The big wrench is a Williams, #37, marked 5/8 and 3/4, though the openings measure 1-1/16" and 1-1/4" respectively, so I suspect BS or Whitworth?

For all lots, I paid a total of $195
even if all I got was the end mills, that's less than $0.50 each.

But I also got a really odd item in one of the lots, which I'll post in a separate "What Am I" thread.

I suspect the over sized wrench is for square nuts and bolts.

I believe that once upon a time some makers marked the wrench ends with the size of the bolt the wrench fit, not the size of the bolt head as is current today.

Those little jacks are sweet..I would try to find a project just to use them..holding up a little trailer...leveling an old doll house...lol...really what would you use them for? Fab work?

You can use the machinist jacks for long parts in the mill or even thin material.

Ok I can see that...but would the material rotate on them? It looks like the jack heads would tilt to accept a round stock for the mill...but that just seems like a pain in the *** or am I missing something? I use pipe stands for my 360 welds on pipe, but they have rollers on the heads for rotating. Those look like they would fall over when you spin up the mill/lathe. I have a Bridgeport that has a 48" table and have never seen anything like that for holding up a piece of stock that is lets say 70"..I just grab another Kurt Vise and bolt it to the table.

Your thinking lathe, not mill, a lathe rotates the part against a cutter, a mill rotates a cutter against the part... (Think glorified drill press)

The heads on it now are for flat stock which keeps the part level. They do have attachments that have the V notch in them for round material. Check out the Starrett screw jacks. I do agree for a 70" piece of stock I would use a vise as well. Now lets say your using 1/4" thick material...hanging off the vise 8" and you need to drill and counterbore it on the end. It would be quicker to just put a jack underneath the part to support the material from flexing.

For supporting long parts in a lathe you would use a steady rest.
