I picked up a very nice, complete Challenger 24 pc. Socket set (no. 2095) at an auction last weekend. Looks very lightly used, there are a few cracks in the plastic holder. I have kind of kept an eye out for one of these, as we have an empty metal case for a similar set in the farm shop, but the tools all seem to be lost to time. Anyway, just thought I'd show it off and see if there's much info about Challenger in this set's timeframe.

Very nice set of tools.

I've had several of these kinds of sets pass through my hands and the plastic insert always seems to be messed up in some way, so I think it's common with these.

BTW, the Cleveland "4" city postal code and no zip code in the address on the label indicates this is pre-1963. The style of the artwork and the streamlined corners on the box indicate late 1950s to early 1960s, leaning toward the latter part of this period.

You could be 100% right about the postal code; But I went through several catalogs from the 1950's and the first few years of the 1960's without seeing any challenger sets from the op's model number. I did find talk about the 1964 date about challenger tools. What I did find was his set from the mid 1960's.

Found some new information starting date of 1957 and up.

The zip codes were not mandatory at first, and some delay took place in the use of them.

Reading through this thread might help. There is a Pendleton Tool Industries Inc logo on your lid label. That was the parent company, the new name for Plomb/Proto. I forget if we ever reached any conclusions on using that to date the sets.

Ingersoll bought them in 64? It seems like around that time the plastic inserts started.

Thanks, guys, for all the input. In my original post, I stated that I had an empty metal box that held an identical set; here are a few photos of that label... not in nearly as good shape. It is the same identical set, even still numbered as "No. 2095", but this one is named "Challenger's ViP- 2". Also interesting to note that both carry the Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. logo, but this one includes the Penens name and Schiller Park, Ill. address. Anyway, I wouldn't know a thing about them if not for the info on this site... thanks again!!

When was the Challenger brand discontinued? I found a partial Challenger socket set in this unmarked red carry box. I threw all of my Challenger marked tools into the box. They are available for trading if anybody is looking to complete a set. Were the tools marked Challenger by Proto more recent? I have some of those in a Proto box.
