Hi, I 'd like to pick up a scan tool, I'm hesitating between the Autel MD802 and the Launch c reader Professional 123. I want complete coverage of engine, transmission, abs, and airbag. I want live data stream, freeze frame. I know they both do that, but which one is the better product for the price?

i have the launch cpr 123 for over year now and havent had any issue with it. I final did the free update the other day and made it 100 times better. I dont care for the autel stuff. i have used their other scanners and didnt like them that much. just my preference though.
I also have the CRP123 and it is good. It will not read my 99 Grand Am SRS system. I have seen on another forum about the MD802 will read your body,door,LCM modules. Mine don't. I would like to play with the MD802, it might be a better buy than the CRP123.
I have been looking into both scanners as well. I work in a bodyshop and it isnt uncommon to need to replace airbags and shut lights off. In my opinion, I think the launch looks more legit because the autel is only one year of free updates and if your trying to talk with the bcm on cars i dont think that a cheaper generic scanner is going to get your very far... probably need a higher dollar unit (snappy,genesis,ect)
I was told by my Cornwell dealer when I bought the CRP123 that the updates where only a year also. I have not owned it for over a year to test that theory.
Well that makes sense, since i was told that by our MATCO dealer.. and i pretty sure he could bend a prybar in a sand pile

I've had the MD802 since it came out. Support from Autel has been surprisingly good. They've allowed me to keep doing updates for the past 3 or so years (though I don't know how long that's going to last). Compared to the Innova, OBDLink, Actron and OTC tools I've used or owned prior to this, the MD802 is like a scan tool on steroids. Bear in mind, some makes are going to have much better coverage than others. You do get PCM, BCM, ABS and SRS functionality in just about every make, but others go a lot farther and you can scan down to model and model year (particularly, BMW.) It's basically a MaxiDAS without the bi-directional functions. Everyone I've lent it to or used it for has been very impressed. I ended up buying a few other Autel tools based on my overall impression with the MD802 and have been equally happy.

also check out the cpr 129 launch scanner does alot more than the cr123. can do from website

Yeah I saw that, but isn't in the MD802/ CRP123 price range.

I have the 802. I don't use it very often since the shop has the souls ultra, but it's a good basic scan tool. They recently upgraded it to include tpms, park brake, and oil life reset but I haven't tried it yet on these. The live data is limited but useful for o2 fuel trim etc. lots of makes and models, and it seems to be able to decipher factory specific codes.
The only problem is that updates are slow to load on memory card. You will need a memory card, 8gb might be large enough, but 16 is what I have. I had a 4gb and after the updates it's way too small so had to use a larger capacity card.
I paid $299 for mine but I saw it on sale at princess auto for $249 recently I think. Definitely worth that.

Hello to everyone. I know this is an old topic but I'm about to purchase my first scanner.
My question is, does anyone know anything about RFE1 Diagnostics? They are located in Arizona. They have an Autel MD802 new version that they have modified to do a little more than just the standard over the counter one. Would like to have a little feed back on some suggestions on a good scanner. At a later date down the road I would like to upgrade to the next level of scan tool.

I asked the same thing about 6 months ago before I bought my MD802 and got crickets. I decided to keep it simple and get the regular model... didn't seem like a good risk for almost $300 extra, and potentially losing any gain if they don't update and I have to download standard software from Autel.

I didn't want to spend to much on my first scan tool, but I do want something that's not going to be out dated when I get it. I don't know anything about them, but it shouldn't be that complicated. The Autel MD802 that I'm looking at sell for $399. with free shipping. Sears has an MD802 $339. Of course there will be tax on top of that, then it's close to the same as the other with out the modifications. Just need a little advice on what to look for. Thanks.

I have had great luck with the actron u-scan about 150 for all cel,airbag just no bi directional features a lot cheaper and uses cellphone as well

Nice scanner. I haven't moved up to a smart phone yet, still use the ole flip phone. I can see the advantages of using that scanner tho. I'm still "Old School". Thanks for the info.

Gotcha, you're looking at the "engineering version", I was looking at the $620 one they supposedly loaded with all the DS708 stuff.
I can't really tell from the description, but the "engineering version" sounds from their description like all it adds is TPMS? Mine does service interval resets and electronic parking brakes just fine. Keep in mind if it's got side-loaded software, you can't get an update thru Autel like a normal one can, as you'd overwrite the 'special' software. I have one of the Autel TPMS tools to check/activate sensors, and a fancy Launch for bidirectional including programming sensors in... and honestly, I haven't had to use the Launch to program a sensor yet, I've done them all through the manufacturer's manual method using the tool.

That's good to know. How often should a scanner be updated? I'm retired and only be using it for side work and personal use.
