I don't think you're going to find anyone with the inventory and customer service that Amazon has. I've returned a couple of items, and it's very easy. You pull the order up in My Orders and click the return box. It will ask you the reason and e-mail you a UPS shipper. You tape it over the original shipper and drop it off at the nearest UPS store. When Amazon gets it, they will credit your credit card account.
I use Amazon for almost everything I need and with next day or two-day shipping, it's very convenient.
My reasoning why I dont support this, is similar to why i dont support ebay or places that are cheap but lifetime hassle free warranty.
Yea sure amazon might be easier to work with when it comes to returning items that are damaged, not as described, or counterfeit.
I personally, dont want to deal with any of that at all. To me it does not make sense to have to order something, get it, have a need to return it and dispute for a refund from amazon or third party, put a return label on a packing box, pack it back up, and take it back to the ups office. Nothing about that sounds convenient to me. Now somethings I dont really care if it comes unmolested by the driver, or if its counterfeit and then I will order from amazon.
Also almost all places offer free 2 day shipping nowadays.
Hell I actually got my mitutoyo calipers from a source that I was 100% confident wasn't a counterfeit or a used repackaged exchanged broken one, and it got here slightly over 24 hours, plus it was cheaper than amazon.
Yes you could probably order one and everything went smoothly, then the 3rd guy down the line gets a fake. I dont want to take that 30% chance of getting ripped off and returning it, wait for another. Especially when there are other options that are up to par, if not better, or even slightly worse when it comes to shipping in exchange for quality assurance.
Plus, I dont find it necessary to buy everything from one retailer that has it all in inventory . Hell I dont even do my grocery shopping at one store.. there are hundreds of retailers that offer good customer support and quick shipping, and collectively are just as competitive and can offer additional incentives if they are a specialized retailer.
I think the only "tools" I've ever ordered from amazon was my ernst socket boss/ tool tower organizers because it's all just plastic anyways and I wouldn't have cared if it was a knockoff much anyways as long as they performed.
I'm a bit of a tool snob myself, I dont like alot of the hf tools others here do because I find nothing convenient about having to drive to their store to exchange in a broken tool for a new one, right in the middle of a project. To me that is very inconvenient and gets old very quick, and makes me irritable for the remaining duration of working on the rest of whatever it is I'm working on.
