West Marine also had them for $99 (That's where I bought mine). Had to pay tax though since I'm in CA, but total would have come out to be the same as Newegg. I highly recommend this if you want the highest quality lithium jump starter. If you need bells and whistles, then you gotta look elsewhere. It's been on backorder on and off since people are grabbing them as soon as they're available. Get one while you can!

Best deals maybe now for the holidays, overall they will continue to drop in price and improve.

BTW as I understand it, there are at LEAST three fundamentally different types of devices now with different characteristics, lead acid, li polymer, liFe polymer, and super caps.

Any idea on what works best?

Go buy a deep cycle battery and some good jumper cables.

(Using a deep cycle battery for starting will have NO EFFECT on it life !)

Each technology has its pluses and minuses

Lead Acid - Low cost, high power density for its size (not weight)

Li-anything - Expensive, high power density for it size and weight. Internal failure can cause combustion.

Super Caps - Expensive (unless you are a DIY and can find a "good deal" on individual caps; even then, not cheap) Reliability is still somewhat of an unknown (I have not seen any "commercial" battery replacement). Lower power density, but they are capable of repeated high discharge and recharge rates. High discharge or recharge rates over several minutes, can cause excessive heat and explosion.

Each requires a unique charging system, although the super caps will probably work with most lead acid charges, especially non-smart, timed chargers.

The good part is that all these different types as well as all the brands are duking it out in the consumer marketplace, which is driving quality and price improvements.

Within 5 years we will see at least one generation of improvement, and production cars with non lead acid main batteries that are tiny and last 5 to 10 years.

OTOH I could also see dual battery systems common, tiny AGM main battery combined with a tiny high current, but lower total capacity starting battery.

I hope you're right. The applications are numerous, like a new cordless welder similar to Hobart's Trek which Hobart failed to market well & then stood around scratching their heads trying to figure out why they "had to" discontinue it.

Wizard is right (deep cycle for starting), and it is the best value. AGM needs no maintenance, can be mounted in any orientation, and has minimal off-gassing.
