OMG!

I had NO idea!

I thought it was just fixing a scrape or dent and slapping some Bondo and paint on a car!

It is so much more!

Taking a class and I'm chest deep in it!

Can anyone recommend a how to book, dvd, youtube channel etc? I've done a lot of fabrication but I'm looking to learn more about body work especially rust repair.

You can do a job that looks good from 10' and will last a couple of years with "tiger hair" and resin and a lot of filler.

What is amazing is that there are a couple of adhesives out there now designed specifically for bonding auto body panels and they seem to work well with proper surface prep. Clearly for use in non-structural areas.

The big problem with older car in the "salt belt" is that when you go to repair one area, it almost always leads to a much BIGGER rust problem. Easily double or quadruple the time and money !

Paint matching/blending is an ART in itself !

This guy has some pretty good videos. Lots of rust repair.

Nothing pretentious, no exotic tools, In a few videos, he makes no qualms about cutting corners to save his customer money, like using slip-on rockers on an old truck to keep it on the road for a few more years service..

If you have much interest in hammer/dolly work, the book The Art of Metal Bumping is a classic.

Painting is an art unto itself. With the current paint technologies you have to have a pretty good idea of how each particular brand and product reacts, and why. It gets complicated quickly.

Wizard, there are plenty of structural adhesives out there in use on the cars. I have been involved at a high level at all automafuctures in this area. I have been involved for 27 years bonding all types of materials and some that didn’t make it. Your instructor should get information from Lord adhesives and 3M. There are other companies but these two should cover the spectrum quite well. I have seen the metal coupons tear in half while the 1 square in of adhesive held the coupons together.

When I did a fabrication course a few years back, one of the tutors was a time served body repair tech, and he said it wasn't just welding stuff together anymore, its reading the repair sheets and understanding what you weld and where and using which process and knowing what you stick together with adhesives - some of the new boron steel parts are glued as heat takes the strength out of it. he also reckoned should you fail to read and understand the repair sheets and just weld stuff up, you could end up liable if there was an accident and the crash investigator decided the "improper" repair was a cause of the accident

I'm comfortable with metal shaping. I've done a few projects from scratch (motor cycle tanks, shaped intake plenums). Looking for something on rust repair specifically.
