First, Thank you for your service. I would look on Craigslist or other sources for a used box to start. You can order replacement lock kits from manufacturers, online, or off of trucks. Also to agree with others, if the shop gives a vet grief because of the brand of tools or box it is likely not the place you want to work anyway.

Out of curiosity I started looking at Craftsman tool sets and found this one at a very deep discount, probably because Sears is cutting ties with Craftsman.

Don't waste your money.

You'll learn as you go what you'll need. Just buy quality tools. I wouldn't bother buying a retiring persons setup. Maybe a kid that quit. A retired person will probably have outdated tools for what you'll be doing

I have worked on my own cars for several years now and I have a pretty extensive tool collection for my home shop. I am trying to go into whatever shop I land in as self-sufficient as I can off the bat which means having a well rounded tool set. Why should I not get this set seeing as it has such a big discount right now?

Because everything in that set you're going to replace. There is no need for 150+ wrenches at all lol.

Where exactly are you going to try to work? A heavy truck shop or automotive shop?

There could be a bit of excess in that set I admit, but I would rather have too much and not need it than not enough; and sometimes you really do need two of the same size of wrench.

I am looking at being a GM tech as well as still working to be a heavy diesel tech along the way.

It's a bunch of fluff. It's not worth the money.

I've been doing this for 10 years and have 4 sets of wrenches. 8-21mm and 1/4 - 1 inch sae flank drive. Xl ratcheting box set. And sae and mm ratcheting stubbies.

I have a few 1 inch and bigger wenches for odd stuff. Ford ball joints are one thing.

This drawer is most of what you'll need. There's some stuff missing Out of the picture but nothing significant. If this thread is still active I'll post the rest of my drawers next week to give you an idea

That's just a tad over the top, but I do agree that a lot of tools in this set won't get used very much. One could do worse, spending 10X as much on Snapon and having the same issue. Given the per-tool price, it's not a bad way to go to get started without too much of a hit to the wallet.

One advantage of buying a set like this is that you save time piecing together your set. And as one is working, one will determine which necessary additional tools to buy, like long extensions, wobble-drive extensions, etc.
