Sorry if not Posted in the right category, I am on the phone not computer. does anyone have a recommendation for a lower priced (personal use) unit that plugs In to the port under steering wheel of cars? I just want to be able to query a code, & google it before I go to the dealer, maybe clear an errant code. HF has one for $50 plus coupon, but I see cheaper ones out there. Thanks

The harbor freight ones are not bad for the money. Use the 20% coupon to save even more.

I just bought the Autel MD802 and I love it but it will cost you more than the harbor freight ones. The harbor freight ones are older rebadged autel units BTW.

if you only want to look up codes and clear them there are options for under $20

i have an Autel Maxiscan MS300... currently seeing it on newegg for $15 very basic but if you just want it to tell you the DTCs (just the code, you'll have to use google or some other method to look up what the code means) and clear the codes it works (and is quicker than using torque)

also very interested in this, thinking about going the torque pro route but would like to see a good video of someone using it not just setting it up. any body got any links to someone diagnosing with torque pro?

I also got a elm327 dongle from dx for less than €8 shipped a few months ago! Typical low grade electronics ****, but I wanted to try it out. Coupled to the torque pro app however, it's quite a powerful little cheap combination and it seems to hold up! I much prefer it to the low end dedicated scanners out there, because of the ease of graphing and plotting all the pid's, and the quickly accessible DTC info. I use it on an old android tablet and the big touchscreen sure beats the cheap two button design + it's wireless over BlueTooth. If you load up the tablet with a bunch of service manuals and wiring diagrams and know how to diagnose a car, fixing most engine problems becomes quite straightforward!

Don't expect too much out of it though. Works only on generic obd, but it supports all the cars I used it on (6 different makes so far). No enhanced, manufacturer specific PID's, no airbags, suspension,... That stuff is beyond my capacities as an amateur anyway.
