Auto subscriptions?

I might have missed something very simple . . .but it seems like whenever I post a comment I am 'subscribed" to the thread rather than choosing to subscribe. I just went into my subscription folder and there are 13 pages of subscribed threads, even though I have only subscribed to 20 or 25 threads.

Is there a way to change this setting so I am not auto subscribing or am I doing something else wrong? THanks, I realize this one is probably something very stupid . . . .

UserCP -> Edit Options -> Default Thread Subscription Mode

Do Not Subscribe = Must manually subscribe via drop-down box.
No Email Notification = Auto Subscribed When You Reply, but no emails sent to you.
