well my thinking was that if I didn't shell out for the Speedglas helmet and decided to get that rippin deal on the helmet at HF... with all the money I saved... if anything happened ... I could use that extra cash to get a rippin deal on some Lasik eye surgery in Tijuana!
Hell... I'd probably save enough money to get a full on retina transplant surgery there.

I'm a hobbiest, I don't need to spend tons on money on one.
I was joking about the flames, but not the helmet. I'll trust my eye to Chinese made circuitry.

ruquik - I'm with you. I have a Lincoln helmet and one I got from Princess Auto and I can't tell the difference. They both work fine. One cost twice as much as the other even when I got the more expensive one on sale.

the cheap helmets are probably fine and never have a problem
i'm just the type of person who is prepared to spend more for quality, especially when it comes to critical safety issues
as an example, my street bike helmet I got on sale for $600, my leather riding jacket i got on sale for $550 and my leather gloves I got for over $100.
I ride with a jacket, boots and gloves even on hot summer days - i won't ride my bike in a t-shirt and running shoes.
Besides racing motocross and supermoto, I still took the advanced motor safety foundation course and a couple of Danny Walkers american supercamp sessions http://www.americansupercamp.com/
Call me overly cautious or whatever, but the way I look at it. If HF can sell something for $59 and allow for a 25% off coupon and still presumably make decent profit... let's say the helmet landed in the US is $30. Subtract the freight and the manufactured cost might be $20. Obviously the manfucturing plant is in business for a profit so $5 - $10 profit margin makes the true cost $10-$15
I just don't want to trust my eyes to a product that was manufactured, "engineered" and i use that term loosely and tested at $10-$15 per unit
but on the other hand... in comparison, those helmets have got to be better than the **** people used 40 years ago

The Harbor Freight helmet meets ANSI standards. As far as I know most helmets do. As for the helmets we used 40 years ago, I don't remember anybody complaining about them. There's no doubt that helmets are better today but that could be said about most things.

it's actually better for content and goes into the pro's and con's of a lot more
what i get from that thread is basically the HF cheapo is for occasional use i.e. the hobbyist ... but there is a noticeable and significant difference to a regular user
i still keep coming back to the idea... there's a lot of places to cheap out... toilet paper isn't one of those places
