Hey I was just wondering if anyone on here has tried autoenginuity I was looking at getting the domestic bundle to start its 800 an that's mostly what I work on I'm a tech at a small Indy shop just me and the owner in a small town his scan tool is a mac only updated to 08 and non bi directional just wondering if any techs have tried it and the pros and cons of it vs any other scanner as far as price goes 800 won't even get me an ethos plus on sep and it's also non bi directional

Shop had it for a few months, no one used it and got tossed into the back room.
Have no idea where it's at now.the snap on solus ultra has been a damn good addition to our ford ids'

Best PC scan tool out there. Definitely get an enhanced package. Great support when you need it, and the updates are reasonably priced.

I have used them for years….. very good stuff… love mine
Is it the best for all cars? no… just like ALL scan tools it can be hit and miss.I find them slow on some chryslers. not sure if its the car or the tool. however gm seems to work very well. has some stuff on some platforms the Tech2 doesn't. because the software I have is prototype stuff your milage may very.

The problem with it is its slow in general. Its definitely one of the cheapest ways to get fairly comprehensive access to bi-directional controls and system tests but its at the cost of time and a fairly unintuitive UI which can leave a new user wandering around lost. If you're on the clock, i'd recommend against it and would recommend a Snap-On Solus Ultra instead. Significantly more money out of pocket but their units are much faster when it comes to loading up and the troubleshooters can be quite helpful. There isn't much i'll champion when it comes to Snap-On but in the aftermarket their scan tools really are second to none. In an industry where time is money I personally think the extra expense and reduced frustration vs AE is justified, even more so if its split between 2 guys.

As an added benefit its far more portable than a laptop and will survive in a shop environment better as well. Dont forget with AE if your laptop goes down you just lost your scan tool as well.

I basically like mine, let a shop I know try it out on my laptop, and they were mixed edging toward Snapon.

I bought from RiffRaff at a fairly standard discounted price and free shipping. I'm due for an upgrade, but dragging my feet over cost and looking at other options.

AE is my go to scanner in the shop. Love it.
I have the latest Software and interface connector.

It does have a learning curve to overcome with the interface. Once you master it you will have one hell of a scanner in your hands.

I have the AE Pro Bundle running on an older IBM thinkpad.

Bidirectional controls a plenty.

AE was the first with bidirectional controls for CAN vehicles; way before snappy ever got their first update released....

Couple things to consider with AE. First that cord is everything. If it is lost or stolen you are out EVERYTHING. Second is last I heard AE won't work with windows 8.1 and they say it is a windows issue. It also sounds like they aren't really trying to fix this issue. Since most new laptops come with 8.1 this could be an issue if you ever have to upgrade. I'm sure they will figure something out but who knows when. Just some things to consider. It is probably the most comprehensive scan tool for the money. Also the updates are only 50 bucks a year. WAY cheaper then any other scan tool.

the cord doesn't matter, its the usb dongle you don't want to lose. It worked fine in Win 8, interesting if its not working on 8.1. Most new laptops ship with Win8 unless you specify Win7.

I have it with the enhanced ford bundle and love it. You definitely have a learning curve but once you get the UI it works great. FWIW I am only speaking of the ford bundle because that's all I have used...

I realize you're more interested in domestic vehicles, but I thought this was a fairly useful analysis of the following tools on a BMW:

1. Factory Scan Tool ISIS / ICOM
2. Autologic Scan Tool
3. Launch X431-GDS
4. Autel MaxiDas
5. Autoland Scientech IScanIIwt
6. OTC Pegisys
7. Auto Enginuity

In the analysis, they tested for the following:

1. Number of modules
2. Autoscan/Health Check
3. Bidirectional Control
4. # of PIDs supported
5. Ability to graph PIDs
6. Ability to save info and screenshots
7. Ability to print info and screnshots
8. Programming
9. Adaptations/Relearns

I feel like it's a good jumping off point, anyway. Enjoy.

Although I like them, the update costs on the snappy products are just out of sight - might as well throw it away rather than update after having it several years. So - please jump in if you have experience on either Autel or AutoEnginuity - especially Asia manufacture.

I don't disagree with this, but at the same time its a shop that is incurring the costs. For a busy shop that update fee is nothing. Its not much different than the pricing structures that Mitchell and All-Data run off of.

If its an older unit im surprised your dealer isn't trying to get you to trade up into an Ultra-whatever you have.

I wouldn't even bother with Autel in a shop for anything more than a code puller/live data stream. You buy those units and should expect to have ZERO support or major updates.

We've got the Autel maxidas ds708 in the shop and I have to say that scanner is one serious contender with anything that snappy have to offer.
Extremely badass in Euro and Asian with more depth than snappy offers. Domestic is not shabby, hell, they copied the Tech 2 software for GM it seems like.

I've used it a few times to do some coding on modules; very deep coverage.

Autel has some newer,faster models out now. They are definitely a company that will give snappy and their high price updates a run for the money.

The deal with AE as I understand it is that somebody hacked their software a couple years ago so they went with the double PITA of a USB dongle and special OBD adapter, lose either one and you need to buy a new rig. Not customer oriented IMHO, but you need to look at the nuts and bolts of what each system does for the cars you need to work on. AE still looks good to me for Ford with the full package, but its real handy to keep a small dumb scanner around for quick checks and resetting codes.

How much are updates for the autel stuff? It says it can program ECUs, what all is involved with that? Is the software on the autel unit or do you have to get the software from vehicle manufacturer and then the Autel will program it? Can AE program ECUs?

No neither can do any programing, the newer Autel MaxSYS does have a Jbox as part of the tool that may allow programing, but you would still need a subscription to program.
