Occasionally come up in other threads, but I don't see a thread on this brand. I'm not splitting the name because search ignores three-letter words.
These two are the same size and model number, but different dates (patent pending should be pretty specific, and earlier) and, supposedly, different steels.

Yep J P Danielson. The bottom wrench is the older one. They switched to Controlled from Vanadium happened around 1940 give or take a couple. Indestro and Barcalo also made similar wrench kits.

"Controlled" signifies war time production when many of the elements used in the making of steel alloys were restricted for the war effort use only. I don't remember the exact context but tool makers used the term on their tools as the steel shipped to them from the smelters was all specifically controlled by the Department of National Defence.

The hole in the handle is reminiscent of the wrench sets that were fixed together with a bolt going through all the wrenches when stacked one on top of the other. I have one such set I'll try to get a photo of. It looks like these wrenches may have been part of a similar set.

OK thats how it was. Here's the link on alloy artifacts. Scroll down to table 2 to see your wrench kits:

LesserSon - I've got a few of those wrenches and you can have them for the cost of shipping.
