Would rather sharpen all of my pencils at once automatically rather than by hand but having trouble finding an automatic sharpener. Anyone out there have a lead on one?

I didnt even know they made them for the flat carpenters style pencils.

You could sharpen a box full of pencils pretty quick on a belt sander. Doesn't make sense to me though, I would have to sharpen a pencil multiple times a day and it would take a matter of seconds to grab the utility knife out of my pocket and freshen it up.

This is why I went to thick-lead mechanical pencils. It may sound silly at first, but being able to just click out another piece of lead is so much more convenient than fighting a pencil or sharpening it or breaking the tip while you're using your knee and two hands to mark an odd measurement, etc. And, if I need something thicker or more permanent, I also carry a box of sharpies as well.

Now, if you're the type of guy who uses a carpenter's pencil like you're trying to engrave stone, then you'll need to either learn to be easier on the pencil or just get used to using that utility blade...

Which mechanical pencil do you recommend?

Honestly whatever is cheap and/or on sale that has the thicker leads (not that 0.5mm stuff). Just buy a multipack of 12 because eventually these will get lost/thrown away/crushed by a tool/etc.

Do you really want a rounded point like this on your carpenter pencils or the more traditional knife blade shape point? I use a knife and sandpaper to sharpen mine.

Go with a Pica. Not only does it mark deep holes, and have a holster, it also has a sharpeneer

They also make a "Big" model , more like a trad carpenter pencil

+1 to the Pica! After seeing several pros in the trades using them, I finally ordered one last week. All of $20 on Amazon for the pencil with a variety of leads (graphite and red/yellow crayon leads). This thing is amazing! Great quality and the long tip lets you mark deep into holes on things you are mounting or marking.

I just ordered that Pica. I have been using a Write in the Rain pencil with 1.3mm lead. I can't use regular mechanical pencils, I just continually snap the lead. I can run through a lead in seconds.
