Hey guys,

I am looking for a new scan tool for the house. I've been working with a decade old code reader and I think it's time to upgrade.

I'm looking to spend around 150$ or less on it and was hoping to get some of your opinions. I've been looking at some of the launch and autel offerings, any thoughts?

I'd grab a Foxwell NT510 in that price range and buy it with the bi-directional module for whatever make of car you have the most of / work on the most. It scans for codes just like all the others, but has the added benefit of bidirectional control and being able to talk to all of the other ECMs on the vehicle which the other cheapo scanners do not.

I wanna say mine was 169$ on Amazon when I got it.

This would be my recommendation. I have the same unit and considering the price, I'm very happy with it.

I heard you can have teeth pulled out before the Fox well loads

The initial loads not so bad but auto scan can take forever. I've also found some cases where it just freezes doing an auto-detect. Strangely, on my GF's Olds Aurora if you just manual enter ANY vehicle, then back out and do auto-scan it works fine. But if you power up the tool and hit auto-scan it freezes every time. Only on that one car so far.

It definitely has its limitations but I still see it as a pretty good tool especially for the crazy low price.

I almost brought one but got a cash deal on a new maxme that I couldn’t say no to. I’m glad I went with that lol

Most of the inexpensive code readers (under <$100) work similar. Actron makes some nice cheap units for quickly grabbing codes. You may want to up the budget slightly and look at getting some bi-directional controls.
