I have a run-of-the-mill Craftsman/ Devilbiss air compressor with a 20 gallon tank. I want to expand my air tool collection for automotive work. Would adding a 20 gallon auxiliary air tank improve overall performance and be worth the money? Thanks. Rob

IMO, if the same output machine (i.e. hp and cfm) are available with bigger tanks, then its a decent idea. In theory, the machine should cycle less because you have more reserve.

I will be adding a ~30gal tank to my 3hp/10cfm 20 gal compressor when I get the air plumbing happening.

The pump can only provide air recovery at the same rate regardless if you have 1000 gallon tank added. So once your air runs out, you have to wait. You WILL get to spin a couple more lugnuts off before your compressor starts back up. Or operate whatever tool you're using longer before you're compressor starts again. If that's what you're after , go for it. You won't have any more cfm capacity than before.
