Truth is....I have yet to see a book that really explains it properly....the best way to learn is do it....
Have you considered getting a part time job with an electrical guy...like on the real cheap....help him out on a couple of jobs...maybe for free in exchange for teaching you a few things?
Downside....if he is a POS electrician....you will learn bad habbits...
Case in point....I do all of my own plumbing...not because I'm so cheap (just broke)...but because I actually enjoy it....(but not for a full time job)...anyway, I was having a plumber redo my bathroom sewer...I had gutted it due to a rotted out shower pan....when I say gutted...I mean removing a 10'x14' section of flooring and 3 walls....my future 2-story addition is going to be on the backside of the bathroom...so he was extending the sewer out the rear of the foundation....I just didn't have the time and tools...and it was mostly grunt work.....
He is the one who told me about de-buring the inside of all copper pipes....and boy, does it make a difference....I re-did the front of my house where the water comes in...before, you could hear the noise of water flowing...even a small flow....now you hear almost nothing....I don't think you will find that hint in any book....
