I am building a 30x40x10' stick built garage. I am going to build it in stages myself. Not sure if I will ever get around to insulating and sheet rocking it. But, was curious on an average cost to have someone insulate it with spray foam.

I paid 85 cents per board foot for closed cell nearly two years ago. Friend of mine just had his house done & he paid the same. Different contractors.

I would strongly suggest shopping around quite a bit. I don’t know the “board foot” price as I have both open and closed cell and they weren’t priced separately.
My build is 30x40x14 with three big doors. There are 1600sf of wall and 1320sf of roof area. I have 5-1/2” of open cell in the roof, 3-1/2” open cell on the upper half of the walls & 1-1/2” Closed Cell on the lower half of the walls. All of this was $3500.
This was done by one of the biggest insulation contractors in the area and they originally bid it at almost twice that. My build (self-build) stretched out in time and I called all the foamers for new quotes a couple months after the first round. Most were the same as before (6500 to 8200) but these guys I guess were a bit hungry and quoted 3500 this time. I said “come on, right now!

In my area it is generally $1 a foot for contractor pricing.
Not sure retail cost.
This is for open cell, 5" on walls and under roof decking.

I have used 3 different companies over the last few years and fwiw, they all say the cost to do walls is half what it takes to do under roof decking.

I'm in Texas. 7/2018:

Costs are appearing to vary pretty wildly, I'm getting bids with swings of up to 50%.
What I've sorted out, in my area:
Closed cell foam, R-7 per in, is $1 per in sqft.
Open cell, R-3.7 per in, is $0.25 per in sqft.

Basically, for jobs my size - which is almost 5000 sqft (roof, walls), you cannot DIY (Tigerfoam, etc) for less than just getting it done.

This is for a steel building absolutely nothing in it, so it's dead easy, other than the 16' wall size (need to spray the roof).

So to get to an R-13 or R-14 envelope with open cell, which is below recommended minimums in my area, I'm looking at $5000 for a 40x60 building. I'm probably going to go with these R values as I do not air condition very often (a few days a month) and I have solar power, so my power costs are low.

There appears to be a cellulose product nationwide that is sprayed on "wet" with adhesive. I actually see it in the building that I work in. It's called K-13 and you can see who installs it in your area. I haven't been able to get a good bid on it yet, but it SHOULD be cheaper than open cell foam. It's advantages should be cost, much more flame resistant. Disadvantage will be that it's not going to handle water very well at all and won't handle hail damage either.

I'm planning on using 3 x 24k Pioneer Ductless split systems, about $3600. Moving to 2 x 36k units actually drives the cost up a bit. Mr. Cool costs more also, but has a better warranty. I have the vacuum equipment from working on car AC systems and it's really not that hard to evacuate lines.
